Sitting in worship and listening to my brother in Christ present his sermon on a recent Wednesday night led to my thinking about God’s love. Bro. Mike shared a message of how God loves people. The lesson had me asking, how can God love ‘them’? How can God love the evil people who take innocent lives? Every day we hear of the global terrorists who plot, plan and execute their plan to hurt and kill as many people as possible with their bombs and bullets. How can God love those who capture

Christians and then make a public display of their death, because of their faith in His Son? How does God love the rapists, mass murderers, the dishonest lawmen, the corrupt politicians?

The Bible tells us plainly that God does love ‘them’. John 3:16 & 17 the words of Jesus are preserved in Holy Scripture and the Word declares: “For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the World to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.”  The apostle Paul confirms the love for God for the wicked and sinful. Romans 5:8, “But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

The Word of God is convicting. All of us have sinned. We have fallen short of God’s glory. The Gospel calls us all to repent. And so my question changes to, how can God love ‘any of us’?  Perhaps the best answer comes from the record of Creation. Genesis tells us of God’s handiwork. The crown and glory of all that God made was man. Genesis 1:26, “Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, in our likeness.” Genesis 2:7, “The Lord God formed the man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being.” God loves us because He has fashioned us in His image.

God hates sin, not sinners. God has given Jesus as the atoning sacrifice for our sins. The Gospel of Jesus calls every human to repent of our evil deeds. Jesus says, “Come follow me!” The sinless Jesus calls every sinner to know God’s love.
