Current Position at BISD and former position, how long have you been with BISD, and tell us about a typical day at work: I have been teaching Pre- K here for 19 years, but I have 21 years with this district. A typical day for us is full of hugs, songs, books, and meaningful play. We are teaching basic skills, so that transition into kindergarten will be as smooth as possible. Our goal is to make the first year of school a positive experience, and set the foundation for life long learners.
Subject(s) taught, and grade Level(s): My first job was with the Texas A&M Extension Service as a County Home Extension agent.
After I married I taught 2 years at BES as a 4th grade teacher.
After my children were back in school I began my career as a Pre-K teacher and 19 years later, I’m still here!
What made you decide to become a teacher: My mom was a substitute teacher, and I actually never dreamed I wanted to teach- until I tried it and loved it! Although I loved my high school home ec kids, I am drawn to my “babies”. They are so much fun and full of wonder. Every day is new through the eyes of a 4 year old!
Previous employment (other schools, etc…) This is the only place I have taught school, except for student teaching Home Economics at Frenship High near Lubbock. I taught adults and 4-H kids when I was an extension agent in Uvalde. I have held jobs as a secretary, home child care, retail sales, caterer, and small business owner of a sandwich shop, been the cook for my church- I’ve even built fences and worked sheep!
What do you like most about your job? Talking and playing with the children, and seeing their eyes light up when they “get it”- when they learn something new. I love the excitement they feel when they accomplish some new feat, and seeing how much they grow through this first year of school. And I love it when they get older and recognize me and speak to me!
What do you do when you’re not at work? Hobbies, etc… I go to see my grand baby every chance I get! I love to visit my 3 children- all of whom live out of town, so I like to GO! I enjoy reading, watching movies or the food network or HGTV. I love to cook, so every once in a while I spend a Saturday cooking. I love to go to Hobby Lobby, but I’m not too crafty. Mostly I spend time with my family.
Tell us one or more of your favorite memories of your own school days: I loved school, and I still remember my teachers. I have fond memories of Menard elementary- playground, friends, the awful smell of the basement cafeteria, and hiding behind a coatrack in the hall so the principal couldn’t see me! (I’d been talking…) I loved being involved in anything and everything- sports, band, choir, one act play, FHA, 4H…you name it.
