With the 2016 football season in the books it is now time once again to look at who made an impression on other coaches from around the district.
Ballinger looked to improve on a promising 2015 year, but due to a combination of injuries and inexperience they were never quite able to get the train rolling despite moving to what was largely considered an easier district compared to the previous alignment.
When looking at the All-District roster it is absolutely littered with players from Sonora and Reagan County, as it should be. Sonora boasted a district high 29 players named as all-district with 7 returning for next season from a Senior heavy team. Reagan County followed closely with 26 overall selected, also with 7 returning. Alpine trailed with 12 named and 6 returning, while TLCA had only 1.
Somewhere in the middle is where we find Ballinger. The Bearcats had 19 players named to the all-district team, but return a district high 9 players.
On the line Jacob Daniels (2nd team guard and defensive tackle) will be missed. Returning the Bearcats will have 4th year letterman Jace King (1st team guard and defensive tackle), 3rd year letterman Divad Briones (2nd team center) and sophomore Brandon Lancaster (2nd team tackle and 2nd team outside linebacker) giving Ballinger one of the more experienced lines in the district.
Reid Matschek (2nd team inside linebacker and 1st team running back), Damian Michalewicz (2nd team cornerback and 2nd team receiver), Ian Conrad (2nd team fullback), Donovan Luna (2nd team tight end) and Tyler Matschek (1st team kicker) will be missed. However, the Bearcats will have a tremendously talented line with Hagen Garvin (2nd team quarterback) returning passing the ball to dynamic playmaker Deaundre Manley (1st team receiver, 2nd team safety and 2nd team punter).
Matthew Denigro was named as the teams utility player as the true man without a position. Matthew did whatever was needed of him throughout the season, playing wide receiver, cornerback, safety, kick coverage and kick return.
Congratulations to all of the District 3-3A Division 2 All-District selections!
