Support Offered to Veterans with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder
6/29/2010 -by Valerie Avery, West Texas Centers For MHMR Public Information
BIG SPRING – A new support group providing advice and companionship for people living with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder will meet every Thursday at the VA Medical Center.
West Texas Centers for MHMR in partnership with the West Texas VA Health System will be utilizing Bring "Everyone In the Zone" a program designed to assist people living with PTSD.
“We found that there is a need to provide this care for veterans, survivors of traumatic events, or family members of someone who is living with PTSD,” said West Texas Centers for MHMR CEO Shelley Smith, LMSW.
Post Traumatic Stress Disorder usually occurs within three months of experiencing a traumatic event, Smith said. But it can occur years later, she said.
Flashbacks and upsetting dreams regarding the traumatic event are a few of the signs of PTSD, along with anger, irritability, self-destructive behavior, and trouble sleeping.
“With the VA in Big Spring and so many veterans living in the area and because of the great care provided by the Veterans Administration, we decided that this was a natural outreach of West Texas Center’s mission of providing mental health care in West Texas.”
West Texas Centers for MHMR acquired grant money to implement the BEITZ program.  Wil Hoggard, a veteran of foreign wars, is West Texas Centers new veterans’ liaison officer.

“We are pleased that this will be a strong avenue for many of our veterans and other affected by PTSD who have received care, but still struggle, and for those who have not sought any type of care,” Smith said.
Meetings are confidential and will be led by individuals who struggle with the same issues as those attending the support group. Referrals to other service providers and programs will be provided if necessary.
Also counselors will be available to meet with veterans individually for additional support if needed.
The peer-to-peer support group will meet every Thursday at 6:30 p.m. at the VA Medical Center, 300 Veterans Blvd. Meetings are free and open to the public. For more information, contact Hoggard at (432) 213-0494.

6/29/2010

Kyle Howard, Nolan County 4-H'er, was awarded the 2010 Texas 4-H Foundation "Fort Worth Stock Show Syndicate" Scholarship valued at $10,000.
The scholarship was one of 223 totaling approximately $2.2 million awarded by the Texas 4-H Youth Development Foundation during the 2010 Opportunity Scholarship Awards Ceremony June 11 in Bryan’s Brazos County Exposition Center.
The scholarship recipients were selected from 354 who applied, said Jim Reeves, Executive Director for the Foundation which is the organization responsible for coordinating the program and for resource development for the Texas 4-H program.  He said the scholarship application process began last January.
The Foundation’s scholarship program has 40 donors including the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, San Antonio Livestock Show and Rodeo, Fort Worth Stock Show Syndicate, Southwestern Exposition & Livestock Show, Star of Texas Fair and Rodeo and the Rio Grande Valley Livestock Show along with the Richard Wallrath Educational Foundation, individuals, corporations, foundations, producer associations, Texas AgriLife Extension Service professional associations, individual honorary funds and individual bequests.
Reeves said the donors share the Foundation’s vision of investing in the future of Texas youth by helping them pursue an education which in turn, should eventually benefit their communities, state, country and world.
The scholarships range from $500-$16,000.
"Scholarships are provided to assist 4-H members who will attend universities and colleges throughout the state," Reeves said. “The scholarship program is a celebration of achievement for 4-H members across Texas. It recognizes the development of qualities inherent to the Texas 4-H program — personal responsibility, civic responsibility and leadership. The program rewards hard work and dedication of young people involved in 4-H.”
The Texas 4-H Youth Development Foundation Opportunity Scholarship Program is the nation’s largest 4-H scholarship program. It began as a single $1,000 scholarship given by the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo in 1959.
The Opportunity Scholarship Program was a highlight of the 2010 Texas 4-H Roundup which was held mainly on the Texas A&M University Campus June 7-11.
The Texas 4-H Youth Development Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization whose members promote and support youth development in leadership, vocational skills, social skills and citizenship.  The Foundation’s Board is a diverse group of 41 Trustees who share a common passion for improving the lives of Texas youth.  Trustees work to secure private funding to support scholarships and programs for Texas 4-H youth.

Action Steps to a Healthy Credit Score
7/1/2010 -by Sandy Taylor
Are you looking at obtaining a loan for college or a loan for your own home? Whether you are twenty-two or forty-two, nothing affects your financial future like your credit score. Your credit score is a number, calculated based on information in your credit report that lenders use to assess the credit risk you pose. The higher the score, the better your credit rating. A good credit score will help you secure a low-interest rate on loans for college or an automobile. Negative items on your credit record can affect your ability to get a job, rent an apartment, or obtain a cell phone. Make building a great score a priority while you’re young and you could actually save hundreds or thousands of dollars over your lifetime.

Click on "Dollars and Sense" under Columns in the menu bar above to read the rest of the story.

Kennels Beware
6/27/2010
Recently, a local dog breeder was relieved of 2 dogs worth about $5000 (a 7 month old Yorkshire Terrier, and a Sire). A potential buyer, who had given a false name, was allowed to enter the breeder's kennel area to view puppies under the false pretense of potentially purchasing one.

When the "customer" left, it was noticed that the two dogs were missing. Runnels County SO is involved in the investigation in the theft of these 2 animals.

Prior to any arrests being made, the two dogs were found
up the highway from the breeder's house walking in the road. They had been missing for almost two days. Luckily, the dogs were found in good condition, not dehydrated or dirty and had been well taken care of.

Beware of anyone that wants to come in your house or yard that your do not know. This is good advice under any circumstance, not just dog-breeders.  If you don't feel comfortable, then deny them access to your premises.

Olfen ISD Superintendent's Report
6/27/2010 -by David Velky, Olfen ISD Superintendent
Olfen, TX—This is a busy and productive summer at Olfen School. We are welcoming our new bookkeeper and secretary, Mrs. Sharon Duesterhaus to Olfen School. Mrs. Duesterhaus comes to us from Whiteface ISD in the panhandle where she has served for many years in the Superintendent’s office. She also has roots here in Olfen and Rowena. She graduated from St. Joseph’s Catholic School and has a home on the lake near Paint Rock. She is glad to be home again after many years away.
Summer school is ending this week. We will have TAKS testing for our summer school students on Tuesday and Wednesday. Our summer school students are to be commended for their hard work and daily attendance. Mr. and Mrs. Cavazos did a very thorough job of organizing and teaching the classes, as well as picking the students up each day.
Coach Halfmann is planning a basketball camp for August 2—6. The camp will cost $30.00 and will be open to all students in grades 3—8. The fee will include a t-shirt. Call 325-442-4301 for more information or a registration packet. You do not have to be an Olfen student to attend camp. This will be a great opportunity to practice basketball skills and have some quality time on the court.
As we approach the July 4th holiday, we are reminded of the many blessings we have as American citizens. One of them is the local control of our public schools. Serving as a school board trustee is an important responsibility within our democratic society. July 25 is the first day to file as a candidate for the Olfen ISD school board. The candidates may continue to file until August 23, 2010. Packets will be available at Olfen School. Call 325-442-4301 for information. The actual election will be held on Tuesday, November 2, 2010 in the Runnels County Courthouse Annex.

6/27/2010

Janet Paleo, with Prosumer Group, will lead attendees through five steps to become empowered in their lives: recovery, happiness, meaningfulness, empowerment and resiliency.

“As the community mental health authority, we saw the benefits of encouraging our consumers to attend this consumer-led training and help our consumer on their road to recovery,” said West Texas Centers for MHMR CEO Shelley Smith, LMSW. “Recovery from mental illness is a lifelong road and we were impressed with the consumer-driven training that Janet Paleo offers.”

The training is provided through a grant from the Hogg Foundation and the University of Texas Health Science Center School of Nursing. Paleo began the Prosumer Group when she recognized that volunteerism and self-direction were essential components of recovery.

She put together the Focus for Life training program that empowers people to find their pathway to recovery.

“This training has received such positive feedback, and we believe the information given here is valuable,” Smith said.

The class size is limited to the first 30 people who respond. Please call Amy Vidal at 432-263-0007, ext. 256. Please leave a name and phone number. Or email Vidal at amy.vidal@wtcmhmr.org

Rowena Catholic Daughters
6/27/2010
Monica Minzenmayer demonstrated the HOPE shell from Miche Bags, one of a number of shells she showed during a program on Miche Bags that she presented to members of Court Our Lady of Grace #1734, Catholic Daughters of the Americas, Rowena, on June 15th. The HOPE shell is Miche Bag's tribute to those whose lives have been touched by cancer.  The words on the bag are actual words and phrases of inspiration from real cancer survivors who were interviewed before designing the shell.  For each HOPE shell purchased, $5 will be donated to The Huntsman Cancer Institute and $5 will be donated to Cancer Services Network in Abilene.  Locally, Monica's Miche Bags will donate a matching $5 gift to Trent's Retreat.  Miche Corporation's goal is to donate over a million dollars to cancer research and treatment.

At the short business which followed the program, it was reported that Vice Regent Pat Vancil, Recording Secretary Jeane Irby and Financial Secretary Megan Vancil had attended a Bi-District Installation of Officers held in Wall on June 7th.  Plans are being made to attend the Officers' Training Workshop in Brady on August 21st.

To mark the end of the business year 2009-2010, members enjoyed an Ice Cream Social.  The evening closed with a prayer for all members who are in bad health.  The next scheduled meeting which will begin the 2010-2011 session is September 21st.

Doggie Adoption Day This Saturday
6/23/2010
The Humane Society of Coleman County has rescued more dogs than they are able to place in foster homes. To try to find new homes for these orphans, the Humane Society will have a special adoption day this Saturday, June 26, at the Humane Society Thrift Store, 108 East Pecan, from 10 – 3.  Some cats and kittens will be available as well.

Each pet will be offered for a minimum adoption fee of $25, plus any donation you feel you can make to help cover the Humane Society’s expenses. However, a donation is not required.

Each dog will be spay/neutered and heartworm tested if over a year old, have rabies and canine disease shots and wormer meds.

The Humane Society never gives a dog away since they want adopting families to realize that a pet will always cost money if it gets the care it deserves, and the adoption fee represents only the beginning of the cost of a pet.

Basic adoption requirements include a fenced yard (unless you live in an apartment or in the country), no chaining, and a commitment to ongoing vet care, as needed.

Visit the Humane Society Thrift Store Saturday. You may not adopt, but you may get the “bug.” If you can offer a foster home, please let the Humane Society know.

Six Year Old Calls 911: Helps Save Little Brother's Life
6/21/2010 -
by Patti Davis, 9-1-1 Program Coordinator, West Central Texas Council of Governments
On February 25, 2010, when his little brother, Corley Belew, fell into the creek behind their house, 6-year-old Charles Childress alerted his parents and then called 9-1-1. Runnels County dispatcher, Carla Bruha, said Charles spoke calmly while reporting the emergency situation. He was also able to confirm his phone number and address.

Thanks to Charles and Carla’s quick action, Corley was able to be rescued from the creek and receive necessary medical attention. In May, Charles was recognized at the Winters Elementary awards assembly for his heroic actions. Runnels County Judge, Marilyn Egan and 9-1-1 call taker, Carla Bruha were on-hand to present Charles with a special certificate, 9-1-1 Hero t-shirt and medal.

Pamela Gilbreth Watkins
Buffalo Gap is abuzz with plans for an old-fashioned Independence Day celebration on Saturday, July 3rd. The down-home fun begins at 9:00 a.m. with the annual parade. All participants are asked to assemble and sign up around the elementary school area. The parade will kick off from Shades of Hope at 9:30 and wind throughout the cool, shady route toward Buffalo Gap Historic Village Museum. For details on the parade, call Shades of Hope at 325-572-3843.

Patriotic costumes and historic themes are encouraged for all. Spectators will enjoy seeing decorated floats, golf carts and bikes and all manner of vehicles. Flag waving marchers will find this an easy walk. Equestrians and horse-drawn conveyances are also welcomed. So decorate your family car, put the kids on bicycles, ride your horse, show off your baby stroller, walk your dog – whatever rings your Liberty Bell !

Festivities continue with free admission all day at the Buffalo Gap Historic Village. The Declaration of Independence is to be read at 10:00 a.m. by Col. Alan Huffines. This moving ceremony includes a roll-call of the states in the order of their admission to statehood with a solemn bell tolling as each state is called aloud. Afterwards, the parade winners will be announced. Cash prizes of $50 for first place, $40 for second place and $30 for third place are donated by Shades of Hope. All participants will receive ribbons and a gift packet with discounts to the Buffalo Gap Historic Village, coupon for a free art activity by Pamela Gilbreth Watkins and more from local merchants. Old fashioned games, horseshoes, etc. will be offered and an Old-West gunfighter will roam about looking to waylay the unwary. All-American musicians can plan on joining in to hold impromptu jam sessions throughout the Buffalo Gap Historic Village complex. Those interested in doing so will need to call ahead and make arrangements with Gina Lockley at 325-572-3974.

About Darkness To Light

Darkness To Light (D2L) is a national non-profit, 501c3, dedicated to the prevention of child sexual abuse through public education and awareness. Research shows that one in four girls and one in six boys are sexually abused before the age of 18. In the U.S. alone, it is estimated that 40 million Americans are victims of child sexual abuse.  D2L programs raise awareness of the prevalence and consequences of child sexual abuse by educating adults on the steps they can take to prevent, recognize and react responsibly to the reality of the sexual abuse of children.

Charleston, S.C. resident Anne Lee, a child sexual abuse survivor, founded D2L in 2000 and serves as the organization’s President and CEO.

Since its founding, D2L has created ongoing public education programs in 47 states and 10 foreign countries. These “Stewards of Children” training programs form a grass roots push at the community level to educate parents, youth service organizations, youth sports leagues and coaches, faith centers and teachers / school leaders.

Additionally, a nationally-acclaimed advertising and promotional campaign helps spread a multi-media message through partners including CNN, Comcast, Time-Warner, AOL, Lifetime, Oxygen and many others.

Robbie Hodges Brings Family Fun to Coleman Rodeo Arena
6/10/2010
Rockin' Robbie Hodges has established himself as one of professional rodeo’s hottest new clowns and barrelmen.

His quick wit and off the cuff banter, as well as carefully thought out acts, keeps the crowd entertained and looking at him for the entire performance.

Hodges always promotes positive, non-violent, clean family humor, and has an uncanny knack for instantly bonding with children of all ages. He genuinely enjoys being a rodeo clown because he likes to talk to and entertain people, especially children

From his home of Cave Spring, Georgia, Hodges takes his humor all over the United States.  You can see him in action at the Coleman PRCA Rodeo at 8:00pm nightly June 17-19 at the Coleman Rodeo Grounds.

If you haven’t purchased your rodeo souvenir, the Coleman County Chamber of Commerce is the place to go.  The new Coleman PRCA Rodeo logo is emblazoned on shirts, caps, aprons, burnout shirts, koozies, bandanas, and visors.  Buy early as these items usually sell quickly.

National Finals Rodeo Bullfighter Returns to Coleman
6/10/2010

Clay Collins has protected the best bull riders in the world at the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas each of the last three years.  Collins has also worked in Coleman each of the last three years and we’re glad to have him back.
Sports have been a huge part of his life.  Collins excelled in football and baseball in high school.  In 1995, he tried out with the Florida Marlins but was later cut.  He has also coached high school and college baseball at Panola College in Carthage, Texas.
It wasn’t until Collins was 21 years-old that the Texas native attended his first rodeo.  That sounds odd, being from the Dallas-Fort Worth area.  But a dare from a friend to try bullfighting has given professional rodeo a great athlete and a fearless protector of bull riders.
See Clay Collins in action nightly at the Coleman PRCA Rodeo, June 17-19.  He’ll be the one in red.
Tickets for the rodeo are $8 advance or $10 at the gate.  Children’s tickets are $4 advance or $5 at the gate.  Advance tickets are available through Wednesday, June 17, at the Coleman County Chamber of Commerce, First Coleman National Bank, Coleman County State Bank, Cavender’s in Abilene, KEAN 105.1 in Abilene, KOXE 101.3 in Brownwood,  Stanley Dodge in Brownwood and Blair’s Western Wear in San Angelo.

 Texas Poppy-Mallow - a Rare sight
6/6/2010
Runnels County is one of 3 or possibly 4 counties in Texas where an endangered flower grows. Runnels, Coke, Mitchell, and possibly Scurry Counties are the only known places where the Texas Poppy-Mallow is known to grow.

The plant grows up to about 30 inches in height, and will have several blooms of a purple or red hue. The roots of this plant grow extremely deep into the sand, made by the Colorado River, which they are very particular to. In fact, these plants will only grow in a very specific soil called Tivoli Sand, which is about 8 feet deep, according to Texas Parks and Wildlife's Jackie Poole.

This particular group of Texas Poppy-Mallows in Runnels county are located just south of Ballinger.  They have brought recent attention from the media and Texas Parks and Wildlife due to the fact that they need to be relocated because some new construction will take place where they currently exist.

The media and TPWD will be onsite Monday June 7th to begin the process of carefully harvesting some seeds as well as extremely carefully digging up the approximately 8 foot of plant, above and below ground.

These beautiful plants need to be protected. Should you find these on your sandy property and wish to help protect the few we have here in Runnels County, please contact news@ballingernews.com and we can put you in touch with the proper TWPD personnel.

Each of these students qualified for participation at state competition by receiving Division I (Superior) ratings in regional competition held at Howard Payne University in Brownwood this past February.

Magdalena Hogan, a junior this past year, also qualified for the competition, but was unable to attend.

Ida Lee Ellis, music teacher at Ballinger Elementary, served as accompanist for the students. Terri Biscoe, Jackie Gibbs, D’ann Hatler, and Laurie Woodruff server as parent sponsors for the state event. Dale E. Ellis is faculty sponsor for Ballinger High School choral music activities.

On the Level
6/1/2010 -by Charles Frerich
Saturday night I sat in the stands at Bearcat Stadium to watch my niece and nephew graduate from Ballinger ISD.  While sitting there I heard the train whistle and the clanging of the rail cars as they moved them down at the grain elevator.  Much like the farmers who had planted their crops last fall and anticipated the coming harvest, these seniors have anticipated their graduation.  The seeds of their education were planted when they were born.  Entering school was the crop emerging, with each grade, another tiller on the plant.  Finally, in the spring, the seed ripens and the seniors graduate bringing to the end the growing process.  Although we never stop learning it’s at this point that what we do with the education and the seed will depend on the individual.
