The Ballinger Bearcat Band is on their way to the UIL State Marching Contest in San Antonio, Texas.  Contest will be held at the Alamo Dome, with the band marching in the preliminaries at 3:33pm, Monday, November 2.  This is the first time in history to anyone’s knowledge that the band will march at UIL State Contest.  We continue to appreciate all the wonderful support from the community, all parents, and fellow students.  We hope everyone will be able to travel to San Antonio to support the band and watch them entertain at the Alamo Dome.  UIL Website:  www.uil.utexas.edu

Christmas Shopping

PAINT ROCK, TX:  Christmas shoppers may want to take a trip to Paint Rock, TX located on Hwy. 83.  On November 6 & 7 (10a to 5p) an assortment of holiday elves has gotten together to host the second annual Christmas at Ol' White Sage across from the county courthouse.  Wassail will be served and samples of heavenly bake goods.   Unusual and one of a kind holiday gifts, wool/mohair socks, jewelry, wrought iron, quilts, purses, art, candles, and much more!  In addition, Kickapoo Antiques will be open along with Ingrid's famous wool rugs.  The community center will hold a jewelry show and an estate will be happening downtown.

Ballinger Junior High Dance - Friday

Ballinger Junior High students, grades 6th-8th grade, are invited to a dance at Old St. Mary's Hall on Friday, October 30th. The dance will be held from 9:30-11:45 pm. Cost will be $3 per person with refreshments being sold. This fundraiser dance is sponsored by parents of the 8th grade class.

Bearcat Band State Performance to be Broadcast Live, on KRUN

Thanks to some great businesses and individuals providing their sponsorships, KRUN will broadcast the Ballinger Bearcat Band's performance in the preliminary round of the UIL State Marching Contest. KRUN will air the prelim results live and when the Bearcat Band is selected for the finals, KRUN will air that performance too as well as the results of the finals. Not in range?      This year, organizers hope to collect 400 gift-filled shoe boxes from families, kids, churches, schools and civic organizations in the area.
     Since 1993, Operation Christmas Child, a project of international Christian relief and evangelism organization Samaritan’s Purse, headed by Franklin Graham, has delivered more than 69 million gift-filled shoe boxes to needy children in some 130 countries.

WHAT YOU CAN DO TO GET INVOLVED: 
          PREPARE—Enlist families, churches, scout troops, community groups and businesses to take part in creating shoe box gifts for needy children worldwide.
          PACK—Fill shoe boxes with school supplies, toys, necessity items, hard candy and a letter of encouragement.  Step-by-step shoe box packing instructions are available at www.samaritanspurse.org.
          PROCESS—Sign up to join Operation Christmas Child volunteers at the collection site in Ballinger as part of the effort to prepare millions of shoe box gifts for delivery to underprivileged kids on six continents.

     Ballinger ISD will release school at 10:00 A.M. on Monday, November 2, 2009, to allow the faculty, staff, and students the opportunity to support the Bearcat Band.  (Breakfast will be served but no lunch.  Busses will run at normal time to pick up students and take home students at 10:00 A.M.)

Low census has been given as a reason for Prop 1, but are we using BMH to its full potential?  With two nursing homes and the geriatric population of our area, the most common health care needs are for chronic heart and lung diseases, diabetes and related complications and seasonal respiratory problems.  Ballinger has excellent family practice physicians with proven records of caring for these common illnesses.  When they require hospitalization many of these patients would prefer not to be transferred out of Ballinger.  Give these patients the opportunity to be treated here.  Let us insist on a management team that will roll up its sleeves and go to work using Ballinger hospital to it’s full potential.

Private First Class Damien Halfmann, USMC

On October 9th Damien Halfmann  graduated from basic training at the Recruiting Depot in San Diego, California, with the rank of Private First Class in the Marine Corps.  He arrived home on leave on October 11 to spend time with family and friends.  On October 20 he left for Camp Pendleton, California, where he will be for a month before being sent to North Carolina to begin MOS training as a construction engineer.  Damien is the son of Anne and Steve Halfmann (in photo).  The parish family of St. Joseph in Rowena  and Father Bhaskar  had the opportunity to visit with Damien following Sunday Mass on October 18 to wish him well.

Career Day

     The fourth annual Career Day will be held on Wednesday, November 4 beginning at 9:00 in the practice gymnasium at Ballinger High School. Doors will open at 8:00 in order for exhibitors to set up their tables. Included in this year’s Career Day are approximately 60 technical schools, colleges, universities, businesses and individuals to allow students access to knowledge by the people who represent these entities in order to help them in their career choices. Times for the event are from 9:00 to 11:30 and 12:15-2:30. Lunch will be provided for the exhibitors using funds donated by the Ballinger Noon Lion’s Club. Door prizes have again been donated by Lange Funeral Home in Ballinger. Paper goods for the lunch will be furnished by Wal-Mart of Ballinger and drinks will be provided by IGA Shoppin’ Basket in Ballinger.
     Approximately 480 students will participate in the Career Day. The students are from Winters, Miles, Ballinger, Grape Creek, and Eden, and Robert Lee. Parents are also invited to come.

San Angelo Batteries Plus Supports National Fire Prevention Week with 9-Volt Giveaway

[San Angelo, TX] Batteries Plus at 4463 Sunset Drive, in San Angelo, a community partner, will give away 9-volt batteries for smoke alarms, on Saturday, October 31, 2009 as citizens prepare to Fall Back and change their clocks back to Central Standard Time on Sunday morning November 1st.
     Doing its part to ensure all households in San Angelo and the surrounding communities have a functioning smoke alarm; Batteries plus of San Angelo is participating in the annual effort by giving away one free 9-volt battery per household on October 31. Additional 9-volt batteries can be purchased for just one dollar. Batteries Plus annual campaign aims to raise awareness of how smoke alarms with functioning 9-volt batteries can save lives and batteries should be changed every 6 months when we Spring Forward or Fall Back .
     A smoke alarm with functioning batteries can alert people to fire and give them time to escape in a situation where minutes can mean the difference between life and death. Further, experts recommend changing smoke alarm batteries when changing clocks the end of daylight savings time on November 1, 2009 and again in the spring, and checking them at least once a month to ensure they are functioning.
     Checking your smoke detector is imperative and can save your life and the lives of your loved ones, but knowing how to get out of your home is just as important, said Richard & Kim Brown owners of the San Angelo Batteries Plus location, noting that more than 90 percent of adults have not practiced a fire drill in their homes in the last six months. We want to make sure people are safe and this is an opportunity to help promote smoke detector use and fire prevention awareness.

Children's Advocacy Center Christmas for Kids Program Needs Your Help

Christmas is just around the corner and once again the Children’s Advocacy Center’s Christmas for Kids program is asking for help from the community to fulfill the wishes of abused, neglected and disadvantaged children. Many of the children served by the CAC have never experienced the joy and warmth most of us associate with the holidays.
In 1999 “Christmas for Kids” was designed to address the needs of children and families affected most by abuse and neglect. Over the years, the response has been tremendous and the CAC is only able to do this with the support from the people of the Concho Valley and Goodfellow AFB. Christmas for Kids’ makes an excellent family, business, group, church or individual project and it gives everyone the opportunity to show these children that the holiday season can be a time of joy, warmth, kindness, care and love. Each year, CAC staff assess each family in order to determine their needs and wishes. The program then matches each child with a sponsor in the community who graciously provides for an abused or neglected child’s Christmas. This year, we’re partnering with Wells Fargo Advisors in hopes of making it even easier for
the community to participate.

There are several ways to help.
1. Just complete the Christmas for Kids sponsor form by going to cactomgreen.org. Submit to our office and we will make a match and send you your child’s profile OR
2. You may visit Wells Fargo Advisors and choose an ornament with a child’s profile from the tree. Ornaments will be available after the Thanksgiving holiday. Now you can start Christmas shopping for your assigned child(ren). When you’re done,
drop off the unwrapped gifts along with your child’s profile info at our office located at 317 Koberlin, or at Wells Fargo Advisors located at 2113 Knickerbocker Rd.

We can’t do it without you! And please remember…...child abuse doesn’t stop for any

THANK YOU , THANK YOU, THANK YOU BALLINGER..........................THE “FRIENDS OF A FRIEND” garage sale was more than a success, it was a HUGE success.  From the time the gates were opened and the shoppers released, the stuff was flying! The Class of 2015 and their parents were stationed and ready for the rush and worked hard all day!  I want to say a big THANK YOU to all that worked and also a big “I am so proud of you” for being such wonderful kids and parents from start to finish. An even bigger Thank You to Bob-O and Sarah Wright. They have been amazing with their production of this garage sale over the  last three months and have logged hundreds of hours.  We also want to extend our thanks to the citizens of Ballinger and their support in the way of donations and then shopping.  Without all of you, the success we had would not have been possible.  At the end of the day, our GRAND TOTAL was $4,030!  Our next big fund raiser is the Cajun Shrimp Boil Pre-game meal on October 30 at 5:00 in the Ballinger Elementary Cafeteria.  Tickets are being pre-sold so be sure to get one early or you can buy at the door!  Our goal to reach by December 31, 2009 is $22,000 which will cover the first two installments, the first being $10,000 and the second $12,000.

The break-down for the statue creation process is as follows:

Send two foot clay statue, presently at First National Bank of Ballinger, to Lubbock to “point-up” to 8 feet tall= $10,000=  money raised

Create a mold of 8 feet clay model after artist completes final details=$12,000=  money almost raised

Casting by foundry of 8 feet clay model= $11,000= money needed

Final payment of bronze casting and placement of statue in park=$10,800= money needed

Park preparation for new statue=$3,050= money needed

Grand total needed of $47,800 

Grand Bank TOTAL since collection started in February=$16,502

We, the teacher and the students, want to raise half of the money on our own and feel we have successfully set the course to do that by December 31, 2009.  What is remarkable is that we have only been actively raising funds since February of this year.  Our town and our kids have rallied together and have made a statement that “Friend” is very much wanted back on his hillside!  Thank you again for your continued support and stop by First National Bank and view the statue before he makes his first journey to Lubbock! Proposition 11 Needs your Vote!

Proposition 11, which deals with eminent domain, is on the ballot for the Nov. 3 constitutional amendment elections.  It is the last of 11 constitutional amendments and will help in achieving eminent domain reform and prohibiting the taking of one private entity and giving it to another.
Proposition 11 is a response to the U.S. Supreme Court's decision in the Kelo versus New London case in 2005.  In that case, the court ruled that the city could take property to expand their tax base, but the court ruled that states could pass their own laws.  Proposition 11 is Texas' response to ensure that future takings are for legitimate public use.
 "It is very important to vote for Proposition 11 on November 3rd," said Daniel Wilde, an agricultural producer from Runnels County.  "Everyone in Texas that owns property could be affected by the Kelo ruling and Proposition 11 is a positive step for the future of Texas."

The Ballinger Bearcat Band Has Done It Again

Once again, the Bearcat Band received Division I ratings from all judges at the Region 7 UIL Marching Competition in Brady, Texas, this past Saturday.  The band will now advance to the next level of competition, Area, to be held this upcoming Saturday, October 24, in Georgetown, Texas, at the Georgetown ISD Athletic Complex located on 2275 N. Austin Avenue.  Specific performance times will not be announced until this Wednesday evening; however, all advancing bands will participate in preliminary marching between 11am-6pm.  Following the preliminaries, the top ten bands will be selected to compete in the finals, which will begin at 7:30pm that night.  Approximately 4 bands will be chosen from the finals to advance to the next level of competition, State, which will be held in San Antonio, Texas.

            The Ballinger Bearcat Band would like to sincerely thank everyone for their continued support.  The send off this past Saturday, as well as the victory arrival, were an amazing show of support for the students.  We welcome and encourage everyone to cheer on the band this Saturday morning, as they depart to Area Competition.  They will travel down Broadway and out highway 67, the Coleman Highway, and the departure time is to be announced.

Predator Management Workshop

We will be hosting a Predator Management Workshop on October 27th at the old St Mary*s Hall in Ballinger from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m.  The purpose of the workshop is to provide landowners with information on predators such as coyotes, bobcats, feral hogs and their biology, status and distribution as well as the laws and regulations for hunting and trapping.  Texas Wildlife Services personnel will display techniques they use in managing predators.  Cost for the event is $10.00 if pre-registered by October 23rd or $15.00 at the door.  To pre-register, simply call the Extension office at (325)365-2219 with your name and phone number.  A meal will be served during the event, so please help us out by pre-registering for the event.

Court Appointed Special Advocate Training

October 16, 2009 (San Angelo, TX) Another session for Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) training will begin on Monday, November 9. Court Appointed Special Advocates work to ensure that children removed from abusive homes do not suffer further abuse due to the overburdened court system. There is great concern about the availability of CASA volunteers for court caseloads in the Concho Valley and we continue to remain in dire need of volunteers to represent children from this region, specifically in Concho and Crockett counties. We currently have around 100 children in need of a CASA. If you are interested in becoming a CASA, you must be at least 21 years of age, complete a screening interview and criminal background check, and be willing to make a 12 month commitment. The average CASA dedicates an average of 15-20 volunteer hours per month.

At the conclusion of the nationally recognized training volunteers will be sworn in by the District Judge as Court Appointed Special Advocates.
Court Appointed Special Advocates help children by:
· Advocating for their best interest in the courtroom.
· Helping to create educational plans for success and
· Assist in accessing appropriate medical/dental care.
· Help the child to find a safe, permanent home.
· Provide an understanding to the child of what is happening in courtroom.
· Serve as one consistent, stable, healthy adult in the child’s life.
What are the duties and responsibilities of a CASA?
· CASA volunteers are asked to visit, at least monthly, with the child/children to whom they are assigned.
· The CASA must read the records and files of the court, Child Protective Services, school, hospital, etc.
· The CASA volunteer is taught how to interview, research, and evaluate facts and circumstances of the child's life.

Pack the Stadium Pink

    On October 16, the BHS Cheerleaders along with Ballinger National Bank will sponsor "Pack the Stadium Pink"  as October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.  Our goal is awareness rather than fund raising (at this time).  We are planning to distribute informational materials, pink bracelets and have pink ribbon temporary tattoos.
    The cheerleaders will wear pink and we encourage everyone to participate by wearing pink.
    We hope that your group, grade, class or organization will help us out and get involved by wearing pink to school and the game on Friday, Oct. 16.

2009 Fiesta Juried Art Show Finale

     Because of the generous support of the community in Patron Donations, entry fees for artwork, sale of the Blue Bunny Book, and sales of artwork,  $3650 in awards were given.  Entries of 102 paintings were received, of which  70 by 37 artists  were chosen to hang in the 2009 Fiesta Juried Art Show  by Juror, Susan Mansell.
     The finale= of the show was a  power-point presentation by Sherrell Hazlewood, President, of the Fine Arts League of Coleman County, with a critique by  Susan Mansell.  Fun and educational.   After 2 days of Show, paint-outs by artists and reception, the guest book contained almost 200 who registered!! (with a number who missed the book).
     The Texas Commission on the Arts has awarded the Fine Arts League of Coleman Co., Inc., $1000 Grant!
     The Texas Commission on the Arts (TCA) has awarded the first round of Arts Respond grants, a new category providing project support for arts organizations. TCA received 205 applications for Arts Respond from 159 organizations in 49 Texas communities. Seven panels of experts evaluated and scored the applications, and the Commission ultimately chose to invest grant funds in 197 projects. (FINE ARTS LEAGUE OF COLEMAN COUNTY CO., INC., WAS ONE OF THEM!)
     Susan Combs, Comptroller of  Texas Commission on the Arts, states Texas is blessed with a diverse economy, and with so many high-profile companies calling Texas home, it can be tough to look past the oil derricks,  (I would add wind farms)  and pine forests to recognize the valuable economic contributions ARTS makes in our state.  Texas cities and small communities alike boast art traditions that enhance their regions culturally and economically.  Those Texas cities recognize the economic uplift a vibrant  arts community can provide.  Arts play a vital role in enhancing and maintaining a city or region=s quality of life B an essential element businesses see in a city when looking to relocate.  Also, Arts play a vital role in Texas= economic development, I encourage all Texans to support sound arts policy and their local artistic communities.  Take advantage of the artistic resources and know you=re enriching yourself and your community.

Investment in Economic Development:
     Support of the arts helps stimulate economic development in the state. The availability of cultural resources and opportunities helps attract businesses to Texas. Additionally, the arts play a role in attracting tourists to Texas, helping tourism, a $53.8 billion industry, become one of the state’s third largest industry.
     TCA grants give arts organizations a seal of approval that can help them obtain broader support. Received a TCA grant indicates to other organizations and potential donors that the grantee’s project or organization meets the agency’s standards and qualifications for grant eligibility. TCA grants act as a catalyst that can help organizations obtain additional funding from other private, local, state, regional and national resources.
     Economic development projects are those that use art to diversify local economies, generate revenue and attract visitors and investment. This program is designed for projects that focus on cultural  tourism and related activities such as festivals, gallery walks, and art fairs.

Canned Goods Trick-or-Treating

The Ballinger FCCLA will be Trick-or-Treating for Canned Goods on Wednesday, October 28. If residents would like to participate, they can leave canned goods in a paper or plastic sack on their front porch with the light on. FCCLA members will come by starting at 6:30 PM. All canned goods collected will be donated to a local food bank.

4H Achievement Banquet Held

     The 2009 Runnels County Achievement Banquet was held Saturday, October 10, at the Ballinger High School Cafeteria. Approximately 125 4-Hers and their families attended the banquet which capitalized on the achievements of the 4-Hers in Runnels County. Dottie Cook, Chairman of the Runnels County 4-H Council, was the Mistress of Ceremonies for the night.
     Picked as outstanding club officers for the past year were Chelsea Toliver- Ballinger 4-H; McKenzi Matschek - Rowena 4-H; Lauren Michalewicz- Rowena 4-H; Janelle Fant - Miles 4-H, and Kara Heathcott - Winters 4-H. Named as Outstanding Leaders were Renonia West of the Miles 4-H Club (pictured right), along with Bill Bredemeyer of the Winters 4-H Club. Silver Star winners were Hadley Hatler, daughter of Jan and D’Ann Hatler, Rachel Gibbs, daughter of Marty and Jackie Gibbs, along with John Glass, son of Harm Ray and Cynthia Glass.
     The 2009 Friend of 4-H Award was presented to Toliver Brothers Chevrolet (pictured left). This local business has demonstrated strong support for the county 4-H program purchasing a champion animal at the Runnels County Junior Livestock Show premium sale and serving as a Gold Sponsor for the Runnels County Gala. Assisting with these award presentations was Runnels County Commissioner Ricky Strube.
     Runnels County is proud to have two (2) outstanding senior 4-H’ers as their Gold Star winners. They are Victoria Kalina, daughter of Cecil and Gayle Kalina of Miles, and Dottie Cook, daughter of Rex and Jane Cook of Ballinger. Runnels County Judge Marilyn Egan presented the honorees with their 4-H Gold Star awards, the highest award given on the county level. These two 4-Hers will be honored at the District 7 4-H Gold Star Banquet in San Angelo on November 2.
     Bike-a-thon awards were also awarded from the recent 4-H/Wal-Mart Bike-a-thon with Jackie Pospichal of Walmart assisting in awards presentations. Receiving the top award of a color TV was John Glass of Ballinger. Second place honors of a 10 speed bicycle went to Abbie Killough of Winters. Mason Donica, Megan Jacob, Sean McGowan and Tristan McGowan of Winters tied for third place and received a cd player. (pictured right)
     Year pins and project pins were presented to the 4-Hers in attendance as well as record book plaques and plates to 4-Hers who prepared record books.
     Special thanks go to donors who helped finance this year’s banquet. Runnels County 4-H appreciates Runnels County Farm Bureau, and Coleman County Electric Co-op for the funds they provided to help honor the 4-H youth of Runnels County and their many accomplishments.

The National Watercolor Society 89^th Annual Exhibit

     The National Watercolor Society 89^th Annual Exhibit opened October 10 at the Brea Civic and Cultural Center in Brea, California.  Over 1000 paintings were submitted for this year’s show.  Susan Mansell’s painting, “Mardi Gras Band” was one of the 100 paintings selected by a panel of three judges.  Mansell was also selected for signature membership in the National Watercolor Society. 
     The Graham Old Post Office Museum is hosting a one woman show for Mansell, “Outside the Box,” for the month of October in Graham, Texas.

ACTS Retreat Luncheon

On Sunday September 27, a meeting was held for those who have attended an ACTS Retreat (adoration, community, theology, service). A pot luck luncheon was also held for some 50 members of the acts group.

Ten members were elected from the group to form a core. The core will set the guide lines for a new acts chapter that will include Ballinger, Rowena, Olfen, Sonora, and wall the group will be called Small STACTS,(small town acts. )

Before the meeting started we had a drawing for a cross to raise money for the retreats. Dana Gore won the cross and Kay Kline won the free tuition for a retreat . After the meeting some of the members went to the nursing home and sang to the residents.

Once again, BHS band triumphs with a Division I Rating

     BHS band again shuts down the competition at the Big Country Marching Festival in Wylie, Texas, by scoring the highest possible rating, Division I, superior. The band had just scored the same Superior Rating at the previous marching festival in San Angelo, Texas, and the directors, Janet Wilson and Brian Owen, decided to rework the finale, to really close the show out with a BANG! Both directors stated that the band was able to execute the changes with excellence after only one practice session. These band members are ambitious, and understand the dedication and hard work it takes to produce a Division I show.
     “These kids are working very well as a cohesive unit with the same goal in mind which is to reach the state competition.” director Janet Wilson said. Considering the judges positive comments of overall excellent performances, expect the band to receive a Superior rating at the District UIL competition in Brady, Texas on Saturday, October 17th at 2:50pm; and then to further advance to the State Competition! We hope everyone will come out and support the band at UIL District competition in Brady this Saturday. Go, Ballinger Bearcat Band!!

Family Enrichment Services of The Children's Advocacy Center

FOR PARENTS AND CAREGIVERS OF CHILDREN AGES 5 AND UNDER:
Would you like to reduce family stress? Help your child do better in school? Increase positive communication during deployment and relocation? Family Enrichment Services (FES), a program of the Children’s Advocacy Center of Tom Green County, Inc. will offer a 12-week session of classes at GAFB, located in the Airmen Family Readiness Center (AFRC) to parents & caregivers of children ages 5 and under. Classes will start January 19th and will run every Tuesday from 11:30-12:30 in the AFRC. Lunch will be provided, as well as weekly drawings and incentives for attendees. In a supportive environment, parents and caregivers of children will explore many of the challenges each of us face. We will discuss deployment issues, stress of relocation, enhancing self-esteem, improving communication, and managing behavior. All services are free of charge and all base personnel are invited to attend, including civilian personnel, NAF and DOD.

FOR PARENTS AND CAREGIVERS OF CHILDREN AGES 11-17:
In addition, FES offers a 10 week session of classes to begin January 7th, held every Thursday evening at 37 E. Beauregard at First United Methodist Church in the education building to parents and caregivers of children age 11-17. The Parent Project®: Drugs. Alcohol. Family disintegration. Kids face unprecedented pressures and problems and it’s no wonder so many of them have given up resisting society’s ills and started reflecting them. This may explain their difficult, defiant or destructive behavior, but it doesn’t excuse it. Parents need to learn effective prevention and intervention techniques in order to help their children swim against the tide and grow into safe and competent adults. 2009 Annual Hunter's Appreciation Dinner

     November 7, 2009 at the Ballinger Community Center located on Crosson Ave., The Ballinger Chamber of Commerce will host the Annual Hunter’s Appreciation Dinner. This event is put on every year to show the Hunter’s that come in from all around, our appreciation for them spending their time and money in our Community. This event gets larger every year, and this year is no exception, we were host to over 1100 people last year. We will feed everyone behind the Community Center in a large covered and comfortable tent. All of the entertainment will be held inside the building. We will have live entertainment by “Lariat”, there will be vendors, raffle items, silent auction, and door prizes inside the Community Center. Our meal will consist of brisket, smoked ham, and sausage, with homemade beans, and homemade desserts, and of course all of the trimmings (potato salad, pickles, jalapenos, onions, etc.). The tickets for this event will be $10 a person, with children under 12 getting in free. The ten dollar ticket will get you great entertainment, great food (please go back for seconds), and two raffle tickets will be issued to you to place on the raffle item of your choice. Come out and join us, we will kick this party off at 6:30p.m. and go until 10p.m. Let Ballinger show you why we are the “Greatest Little Town in Texas”.

BHS Senior Class Fall Carnival

The Senior Class will be hosting the traditional Fall Carnival on Saturday, October 31, at the Community Center. Carnival times are 7:00-10:30 p.m. The funds from the carnival are used for Project Celebration. This event is a fun family night for all. There will be traditional booths, a kidʼs room, and bingo. Since it is Halloween, there will be a costume parade at 8:30!! There will be two age groups: 0-6 years of age; 7-12 years of age. A winning girl and boy will be chosen from each age group. Those that want to participate should report to the Bingo Booth by 8:15. We hope everyone makes plans to attend the Carnival and support the Seniors.

Ballingerʼs Fall Production is the popular musical GREASE, the school version by Samuel French; book, music, and lyrics by Jim Jacobs and Warren Casey. The students are enjoying the rehearsals and are working hard to put on a great show. The community performance will be Sunday, November 22, at 3:00 p.m. Admission fees will be $5.00 for adults and $3.00 for students. Friend of a Friend Garage Sale

Friend of a friend- class of 20015- Indian restoration project in the Ballinger city park is having a humongous benefit garage sale Saturday October 17 at the old complete packaging building next to sonic. The sale starts at 8:00 (bring flashlight as building is somewhat poorly lit).  Items include many antiques and collectables, household goodies, Hammond electric organ, antique crocks, toys, clothes, this may well be the biggest garage sale that Ballinger has ever had.  Please come out and support our young people on this their worthwhile endeavor.  We look forward to seeing you there.

San Angelo Students to Host Fields of Faith Event

(San Angelo, Texas) – Students from San Angelo ISD and area schools will be joining thousands of other youth on athletic fields all across America on Wednesday, October 14, 2009, to share their Christian faith with fellow students during the sixth annual national Fields of Faith event. This rapidly-growing, interdenominational outreach event will be held at more than 400 locations throughout the nation on the same day.
     While many Christian rallies are anchored to an entertainer or professional speaker that creates a spectator event, Fields of Faith is structured as a student-to-student ministry. Peers invite their own classmates and teammates to meet on their school’s athletic field to hear fellow students share their testimonies, challenge them to read the Bible and to come to faith in Jesus Christ.
     “Fields of Faith has become a wonderful event across the Big Country and Concho Valley.” - Steve Keenum, Big Country FCA Area Director.
     This will be the second Fields of Faith in San Angelo. Last year approximately 2800 students and supporters attended at the San Angelo Stadium. San Angelo joins Abilene, Brownwood, Big Spring and Graham Texas in hosting a Fields of Faith this year in our region.
     The national growth of Fields of Faith has been remarkable. Since the beginning of Fields of Faith in 2004, more than 200,000 students have joined in the movement. In 2008 alone, more than 100,000 students gathered on fields across 35 states to participate in the event.
     It’s not just those numbers that have FCA organizers excited about Fields of Faith. It’s the real-life impact that these gatherings are having on young people. Last year’s series of events saw 2,329 students make first-time commitments to Jesus Christ, 4,532 recommitted their life to Christ and 9,617 committed to reading the Bible daily.
     “The impact of Fields of Faith has been incredible,” said Les Steckel, FCA president and a former NFL coach. “When communities stand together on their school’s athletic field for the common purpose of praising God, hearts are opened and lives are changed.”
     The impetus for Fields of Faith began with Jeff Martin, an FCA staff person, who conceived the idea from an Old Testament reference in 2 Chronicles 34 after searching how to help today’s generation of students face spiritual battles and temptations. In the scripture, King Josiah, an influential teenager very similar to Fields of Faith attendees today, gathered his people and challenged them to read the Bible. As a result, they changed their culture.
     In 2004, the Josiah-influenced dream came true when 6,000 students gathered on school athletic fields throughout three states for the first Fields of Faith event. That was the beginning of what has become one of the most significant faith-related gathering of students in a single day.
     “This is not just another event, it’s a change in culture,” said Martin. “We need a generation that is committed to reading the Bible and applying it as their ‘game plan’ for life. That is the challenge…the heartbeat of Fields of Faith.”
     While Fields of Faith has its roots with FCA leadership, the event is designed to include multiple national Christian organizations, ministries and church denominations. A local leadership team, primarily made up of students, will determine the program of each Fields of Faith event.

"The Ballinger Class of 2015 will host a benefit pre-game meal on Friday, October 30 from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at the Ballinger Elementary Cafetorium.  This will be before the final Bearcat home game against Colorado City.  The meal will be a Cajun style shrimp boil, with preparation by The Turnrow of Rowena.  Huge boiled shrimp, sausage, corn, and potatoes will be included.  Advance ticket sales are currently underway.  Tickets in advance are $8.00 per plate for adults, $5.00 for kids.  All plates at the door dine in or carry out will be $9.00, so purchase tickets early.  Purchase tickets at The Turnrow, KRUN Radio, the Ballinger Chamber of Commerce, from Eric Anderson at Mueller, Inc., or from any current Ballinger seventh grade student.  Advance tickets will be available for purchase at the Friend of a Friend Garage Sale.  All proceeds from the meal will benefit the Class of 2015 Friend of a Friend Indian Restoration Project.  All people selling tickets are reminded to please mark a child's ticket with a large black "K" on the front and back to designate a child's ticket."

Child Abuse Survivors and Heroes Meet in San Marcos
City to host state conference for Court Appointed Special Advocates

     More than 130 Court Appointed Special Advocates will arrive in San Marcos October 7-10. Texas CASA chose San Marcos for its 20th annual conference, one with an ambitious name and goal--A CASA for Every Child. There are 5,648 volunteers in Texas who stand up in court for abused children. Texas CASA needs to double that number to provide a CASA volunteer for every child in the foster care system.
     “This tremendous growth in the number of volunteer advocates, known as Court Appointed Special Advocates® has so far allowed nearly 20,000 foster children to have an adult speak up for their best interest in court and beyond,” said Joe Gagen, CEO for Austin based Texas CASA.
     The San Marcos conference provides volunteer advocates and staff from across the state resources with which they can educate themselves, collaborate and network with peers and unify their voice in the fight against child abuse.
     “Volunteers represent the foundation on which local CASA programs grow and thrive. These volunteers’ posses extraordinary amounts of dedication, commitment and passion. That is why it is our pleasure to introduce Mary J. Peterson as our opening session keynote speaker for this year’s conference,” added Gagen
     Peterson’s story, like many CASA volunteers’, is the story of getting to know a boy whose life was full of pain and suffering.
     Jason and his brother both were victims of child abuse, removed from their home and placed in foster care. Determined to provide these young boys with hope, Peterson committed herself to being in Jason’s and his brother’s lives. She will tell conference attendees the story of that relationship and share the happy ending—both boys are college graduates.
     When asked what her experience meant to her, Mary said, “I realized after becoming a CASA volunteer [I was] the anchor in [that] child’s life. Now that makes the difference.”
     Other speakers include author and sexual abuse survivor Jeni Silver as well as former foster youth who will tell what it’s like for a child from the inside. Other highlights of the conference include:

Abilene State Park Commemorates 75 Years

TUSCOLA, Texas – Abilene State Park, a park known to generations for its big, rustic rock swimming pool, its famous RV camping loop circle, and its large pecan and oak trees, has rescheduled its 75th Anniversary celebration for Saturday, Oct. 24.
     This will mark the second attempt by park staff to commemorate the event, as the first try was cancelled because of rain back in May. The day’s activities will run from noon till 4 p.m., followed by a stargazing party led by the Big Country Astronomy Club that night.
     The Abilene High School Eagle marching band—considered one of the oldest marching band programs in Texas—will kickoff the opening ceremony, just as the Abilene High band did back in 1934 during the park’s original grand opening. A tribute to companies of the Civilian Conservation Corps, part of the famed New Deal program instituted by President Franklin D. Roosevelt during the 1930s, and which helped build numerous parks nationwide including Abilene State Park, will also be made during the ceremony. Local dignitaries and community leaders will also be on hand to speak about the importance of the state park to Abilene and the Big Country region.
     “I think the significance of this park is that it has always been a gathering place for citizens of this area, and for visitors to enjoy,” said Okie Okerstrom, who is in her 17th year as park superintendent. “Maintaining this public land and resource and keeping it accessible emphasizes the importance of its history and preserving it for future generations. The Comanche people camped here; pioneer settlers settled here. The buffalo hunters were here… The park has always been a popular gathering spot.”
     Other activities scheduled for Saturday afternoon include birding and nature hikes, live musical and dancing entertainment from groups such as the Order of the Arrow Indian dancers, plus a Kid Fish in Buffalo Wallow and other hands-on activities for children and adults. Storytellers also will share stories of Indians and early settlers of the area.
     In addition, there will be a classic car show and food vendors on site selling snack and fast food items. The park is waiving its customary $4 per-person adult entrance fee (kids ages 12 and younger are always free) all weekend long,
     Over the years, Abilene State Park has become a symbol of both an unchanged landscape for traditional family fun, as well as one of how parks can adapt to the changing needs of their customers’ recreational interests. The park’s CCC-built swimming pool, scenic pecan groves and RV camping loop remain popular attractions that bring groups of people back year after year.
     The park’s recent history, however, also includes some notable changes. Four years ago, the park expanded by roughly 1,000 acres with the addition of Lake Abilene to its original 529 acres. The lake acreage, which includes restrooms and a security fence, adds a new fishing and boating dimension to the park visitor experience. Abilene State Park also boasts the only Yurt tent sites in the state park system. A Yurt is a large, canvas tent structure with a floor and furnishings, giving campers yet another option of overnight accommodations.
     Abilene State Park continues to represent a significant economic contribution to the Taylor County area, generating more than $1 million in sales to the local economy, having roughly a $560,000 impact on personal income, and adding more than $5,000 in sales tax each year.

Ballinger Bearcat Band is EXCELLENT!

Ballinger Bearcat Band received Division I (Excellent) ratings from all judges at the San Angelo Marching Competition this past Saturday.  Next Saturday they will compete at the Big Country Marching Festival at Wylie stadium at 5:20.  The band is doing these two pre-contests in preparation for UIL in Brady on October 17th.  This is the year for 2A bands to advance to area and state so we are working hard. Thanks for your support!!

Ballinger City Park Board Fundraisers

You can contact any board member to purchase a certificate.  The pictures will be taken on Nov. 1^st and 2^nd at the Authority Community Room.  You will be able to come back about two weeks later to preview your pictures.   

Green Fundraiser:
Ballinger City Park Board is conducting a recycling fundraiser. There’s nothing to buy. We are simply asking you to protect the environment by donating your used cellular phone(s), ink jet cartridge(s), laptop / notebook computer(s), iPod(s), digital camera(s) and digital video camera(s). Your used item(s) may be tax deductible and will be recycled in accordance with EPA regulations or refurbished and sold. 100% of the proceeds will help fund Park Playground Project.
There will be boxes placed around town at the banks, Mueller's, Willingham insurance, Little Tots, and the chamber to name a few.  

*These boxes will be put out in about a week.

Ballinger Rotary Raffle

The Ballinger Rotary Club is selling raffle tickets for a 4-wheeler and three guns, to be given away at this year's Hunter's Appreciation Dinner.

You can contact any Rotarian to purchase your tickets. The Rotary club will sell tickets at Wal-Mart Saturday, October 10, 2009 from 8a.m.-4p.m.

Tickets can also be purchased the night of the dinner. Tickets are $20 each. Ballinger Rotarians are very active in their community and help several organizations throughout Ballinger. The Rotary club also gives several scholarships to seniors every year. This fundraiser helps them to continue their efforts.

Depression Screenings

BIG SPRING – Free, confidential depression screenings are available from West Texas Centers for MHMR and Big Spring State Hospital Thursday, October 8, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the first floor classroom of Scenic Mountain Medical Center, 1601 W. 11^th Place.
    Participants will be given a short questionnaire and will speak with a health expert upon completing the question and answer sheet.
    The yearly offering is an inexpensive and reassuring method for people who are depressed or believe they may be depressed, West Texas Centers for MHMR CEO Shelley Smith, LMSW, said.
    Mental health professionals do not diagnose depression but suggest avenues participants can pursue based on their answers to the questionnaire and the ensuing interview, she said.
    Depression affects more than 15 million Americans each year, according to the National Mental Health Association. Clinical depression is treatable through methods, including medications and psychotherapy or a combination of the two. But fewer than half seek treatment because they don’t recognize the symptoms or because of the  stigma of depression, Big Spring State Hospital Superintendent Ed Moughon said.
    Educational materials as well as a list of treatment providers will be offered to participants.
    The screenings are appropriate for all ages, Smith said Screenings are available for children and adolescents as well as adults and senior citizens. Parents may complete corresponding questionnaires for their children.
    Advance appointments are not necessary, Smith said.
    “We have some people who come in, who just want to talk to someone and see if they need to seek professional help,” Smith said. “And we have others, who come in who desperately need help and really open up. It is a great community service and we encourage anyone to come in and talk with our specialists.”
    “This has been a very successful service we have offered to Big Spring and countless people have taken part in it for the past 10 years,” Moughon said.
