UIL Regional Track Meets Tentatively Rescheduled
4/30/2009
AUSTIN, TX— After collaborating with University of Texas officials and the twenty UIL regional track meet hosts, the UIL has tentatively rescheduled the regional track meets to take place after interscholastic competition resumes on May 11. Additionally, the state track meet is scheduled to be held June 5-6 at Myers Stadium at the University of Texas at
Austin.
“The decision to suspend competition was not a decision we took lightly,” said UIL Executive Director Dr. Charles Breithaupt. “Much effort and consideration was given to resurrect the regional track meets and change the dates for the state meet. With the
cooperation of our regional sites and the University of Texas, we are now able to hold the regional and state track meets as we had originally intended.”
On April 29, 2009 the UIL announced that the state track meet would be held May 14-16 and that qualifiers would come from the top four participants in each event from each region.
“At that time, we were simply trying to save the state track meet,” said Breithaupt. “When our staff had the time, opportunity and information they were able to make this happen. We had numerous calls in support of the original decision as well as calls to return to the regional format. We also know that additional conflicts may occur because of these changes. However, we believe this schedule represents the best opportunity for the most students.”
The tentative schedule and sites for the regional track meets is below.

The Ballinger Police Department is extending it's appreciation to the Runnels County Reserve Officers, members of the Ballinger Fire Department, Chamber members and Constable Wayne Poehls for their assistance in parking vehicles at the Ethnic Festival Dance, and traffic control at the parade the following morning. Without their assistance, handling the parade would have been much more difficult. We are a fortunate community to have dedicated people who will volunteer their time for their town. New Link Bar up top
4/28/2009 -by Jason Gore
The link bar, as promised, has been changed and moved to the top of the page (under the Ballinger photo). I hope the change is better and easier to navigate as our old link bar was becoming cluttered. I've grouped certain pages under their topics, such as "Columns." If you hold your mouse over "Columns" you will see a drop down menu appear that names off the other pages for you to choose from. "Sports" acts the same way. If you don't like it, let me know what you think about it, and if you do like it, well, you can let me know that too. jason@ballingernews.com.

34th Annual Texas State Festival of Ethnic Cultures
4/27/2009

Well, even though Tammie tried, she was not able to call in the rain to ruin this year's Ethnic Festival. According to the BallingerNews.com weather station downtown, Ballinger has had exactly one half inch of rain since it started about 8:30pm Sunday evening, which was well after the end of the Festival. The rain is good and so was the Festival, but the "Piggly Wiggly Premium Parking" was not such a hit (pictured right, BallingerNews.com Photo).
This year's parade was one of the best in years. It was quite long with many good floats and other entries from Classic Cars, to Native American Friends, and Canadian Longhorns. We had it all this year! There were more crafts booths than you could shake a stick at and the kids had plenty of games to play. There was a jump-house or two and some bungee-cord trampoline stunt devices that looked just dangerous enough to keep the fragile adults from testing their luck and insurance provider's coverage. There was also the occasional gunfight reenactment that would scare you out of your skin if you weren't expecting it. The fishing pond was a big hit again this year where the fishermen, or "fishergirls", tested their skills at catching some pretty nice catfish. However, it was a catch and release program.
The parade had 4 judged divisions, Floats, Other Decorated Vehicles, Antique Cars, and Walkers and Bicycle Riders. First place in the Floats Division went to "Melting Pot"  by Runnels County Rehabilitation Center
(pictured left, BallingerNews.com photo), and "Friend of a Friend" by the Class of 2015 was awarded 2nd place.
In the Other Decorated Vehicles Division, The Lions Club Sweetheart and Beau won 1st place and Our Little Miss Pageant took 2nd place. Roy Rose and his Chevrolet Corvair won 1st in the Antique Car division and Terry Jones took second with his Replica of a 1904 Merry Oldsmobile. The last division was the Walkers and Bicycle Riders, where 1st place went to the Longhorns, followed up with 2nd place by the Butterfly Garden Go Cart.
Sunday afternoon, the new Miss Ballinger was crowned. Out of 8 contestants, the top 3 were chosen. Ms. Maritza Aguirre, daughter of Eugene and Elizabeth Aguirre, was named the 2009 Miss Ballinger. First runner-up was Ms. Kari Pruser, daughter of Howard and Jaclyn Pruser and second runner-up was Ms. Courtney Gibbs, daughter of Marty and Jackie Gibbs.
(pictured right, BallingerNews.com Photo)

The talent show that followed the naming of Miss Ballinger was loaded with exceptional performers in all age brackets. We had the "Evolution of Dance" and a song from the movie "Grease."  The talent show was made up of 4 divisions aging from 3 years old and up.
The 3 to 5 year old division lead off the show. There were plenty of eager fans crowded around the show tent to catch a glimpse of the performing stars. Kytlin Peterson and Sydney Newsom took first place in the 3-5 year old Division 1
(pictured left, BallingerNews.com photo). The 6 to 13 year olds in Division 2 were quite the performers as well. Jaedan Coy took 1st place, and the Back to the '50s group of Jessica Delgado, Gaby Cortez, McKenzie Arrott, Emily Biscoe, Lexus Gonzales, Connor Kvapil, and Zakk Ottmers won 2nd place. The high school Division 3, aged 14 to 18, saw Vivian Cavazos (pictured right, BallingerNews.com photo) win 1st place and saw Nicole Lira take 2nd. And in the most experienced aged Division 4, for ages 19 and up, there were two contestants. Beverly Gaston won 1st and Laurie Ryan placed 2nd.
Sunday finished up with a few last minute shoppers and face paintings  before the Ethnic Festival Rains started. Mattie Dixon, pictured left, was one of the last ones of the weekend to have a touch of art added to her face, not that she needs it.
Thanks to the Chamber and Tammie Virden for working so hard to keep this traditional event going.

You can take a look at more photos from the weekend on the Faces page.

Texas Wildlife Services Managing Predators
4/17/2009 -contributed by Marty Gibbs CEA-AG, Runnels County
During the months of March and April, Texas Wildlife Services has been busy flying Runnels County to assist landowners in managing predator problems such as feral hogs and coyotes. Runnels County trapper Wayne Johnson coordinated the effort to bring in a helicopter and fly 27 ranches in the northern part of the county to establish a buffer zone. Over the last 10 years, feral hog numbers have increased dramatically in Runnels County as they move southward from surrounding areas. These feral hogs have destroyed local farmers grain crops, row crops and fences and have the potential to contaminate creeks and rivers with harmful levels of e-coli and other diseases. During this time, Wildlife Services have recorded takes of over 290 feral hogs and numerous coyotes and bobcats. The local Wildlife Services program is sponsored by the Runnels County Commissioners Court and local landowners . For more information, contact the Runnels County Extension Office or you may contact Johnson directly at (325)340-2633.

Relay for Life Survivor Spotlight
4/16/2009 -by Elizabeth Cook
On April 3rd I had the privilege of interviewing Stacy Nichols, and hear her story on how cancer changed her life. In 2006 Stacy was 37 years old and planning her wedding for the month of April. In early March, she went to the doctor with some concerns. Her concerns quickly became her biggest fear, it was Breast cancer. Her doctor in Abilene suggested that she move up her wedding, because she may not have that much time. So Stacy and her husband got married as soon as they could and then took their battle on to MD Anderson in Houston Texas to seek out a second opinion. Once they arrived at MD Anderson Stacy was give a better outlook on her case. They only wanted to do a single mastectomy not a double like her doctor in Abilene wanted her to have. When Stacy realized that MD Anderson was the place that she wanted to continue her treatment she contacted the American Cancer Society. They helped her with the hotel stays she was going to need with each visit to MD Anderson. Stacy loved all of her doctors at MD Anderson. They all worked together to come up with a treatment plan. Stacy had to have six months of chemotherapy. The first three months consisted of double chemo one of them was called the Red Devil. The treatments lasted anywhere from 4-8 hours each time. MD Anderson worked with Shannon hospital in San Angelo to try and make things closer for Stacy. After one mastectomy, removal of lymph nodes, and six months of hard chemotherapy on December of 2006 Stacy was given a clean bill of health. She now has to go every six months to MD Anderson for a checkup. After five years she will only have to go once a year. When I asked Stacy if she had any encouraging words for others going through cancer had this to say. “Always get a second opinion.” “Let go and let GOD” “Get your mammograms, DON’T WAIT!”

Introducing "Jadyn's Corner"
4/11/2009 -by Jason Gore
Daily activities as explained from the point of view of an 8 year old can be quite entertaining at times. We're trying something new by allowing our daughter Jadyn to have a "column". She really wanted to "have her own webpage" and the social networks such as Facebook and Myspace didn't seem to be a good fit for our baby girl. So, I asked her what she thought about writing for BallingerNews.com and she thought it was a great thing.  On the left hand link bar, we've added "Jadyn's Corner" (our son Tanner came up with the name). Hopefully, something Jadyn has to say will remind you of a time in your life when things were much more simple. A time where all you had to worry about was making more friends and talking mom and dad into letting you sleep in their bed.  If you'd like to comment to her, she can be reached at jadyn@ballingernews.com, an account which I monitor.

Winters Chamber News
4/6/2009 -by Jean Boles Winters Chamber of Commerce
Selkirk closing provides opportunities for community to bond
With the news last week of Selkirk phasing out their manufacturing operations in Winters, this community has the opportunity to step up and help our friends and neighbors. Let’s roll up our sleeves and focus on what we have to offer to possibly bring new business here. And again, the Chamber strongly encourages everyone to shop in Winters and help our local businesses stay in business.
We are blessed to have Samaritan’s House that provides food and clothing for those in need. Volunteers are always needed as are donations of food, clothing and money. Samaritan’s House will host an Open House and “Shower” on Sunday, April 19, from 2-4 p.m. at 101 S. Grant. Donations are also being accepted for chairs, bulletin boards and other furnishings for the building. Contact Maudella Reeves at 754-1011 for more information.
The community has an Economic Response Team that will work with the Selkirk employees and other displaced workers to help them secure other employment when the time arises. Support organizations will be available to assist the employees and their families. The Workforce Center in Abilene will assist with unemployment benefits, training for new jobs, and job placement. For more information about these services, contact the Chamber at 754-5210 or come by 100 W. Dale, or the Winters Area Business and Industrial Corporation at 754-4542.
The Chamber will host the annual Easter Egg Hunt on Saturday, April 11, at 10 a.m. at the City Park. Three divisions will be for ages 1-3, 4&5, and 6-8, with a prize egg in each division.
Sunday, April 12, is the Easter Community Sunrise Service and brunch at the Country Club at 7 a.m. Attendees are asked to bring a brunch type refreshment. The Methodist Church will furnish drinks.
The new Farm Bureau office at 101 S. Main will celebrate its Grand Opening and Ribbon Cutting on Friday, April 17. Local agent, Jeff Soltow, invites the community to come by for a burger and all the trimmings from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., and register for fun give-aways. Registration is already underway for a gas bbq grill to be given away on the 17th.

Brevard Coaching at Odessa Permian
4/6/2009 -brought to you first by BallingerNews.com
In 2008, the Ballinger Bearcats coached by Brent Brevard won an outright District Championship in football for the first time in 13 years. Coach Brevard is leaving Ballinger with a record of 26 wins and 17 losses after 4 years as the Athletic Director/Head Coach. He took the Bearcats to the playoffs in his last two seasons.
Coach Brevard will be coaching the Odessa Permian Panthers running backs this coming football season. He officially started his new position on March 27th. On top of coaching the running backs, he will also coach the pole vaulting team next track season. He will be picking up that duty next season as the current season is all but over.
On the weekends, Brevard still returns to Ballinger to be with his wife and kids. His wife Elaine is finishing out the rest of the year teaching at Ballinger Junior High. Once school has been released for the summer, they will begin the process of relocating permanently to the Odessa area. However, they will return to Ballinger as often as possible to visit their extended families. BallingerNews.com would like to wish the Brevards success in all they do, and the best of luck in their new location.
You could hear the excitement in Brevard's tone during his BallingerNews.com phone interview...maybe the "Mojo" has already got him!

Girl Scouts Cookie Sale Ends Big
4/3/2009 -Contibuted
Ballinger Girl Scouts ended their annual cookie sale on February 27th. Between all three troops (Daisies, Brownies, and Juniors), the girls sold approximately 4400 boxes of cookies this year. They also participated in a community service project called "Operation Cookie" in which cookies were sold and collected to be sent overseas to American soldiers. Almost 250 boxes of cookies were collected for this project. Pictured is Julie Martinez. She is our top seller for this year, selling almost 800 boxes of cookies. Julie is the daughter of Robert and Angela Martinez and is a second year Daisy Girl Scout. Congratulations Julie! The girls would like to thank everyone who participated in the sale this year and helped make it such a wonderful success for us. We would like to extend a special "thank-you" to James Pechal and employees of Shoppin' Basket for allowing us to have multiple cookie booths at their store. We appreciate all of you very much!

A note from your leaders: Girls, thank you for giving your personal best throughout the cookie sale. Your efforts are recognized and we are very proud of each and every one of you!

More Homes Burglarized
4/3/2009

About noon yesterday a home about 1.5 miles from the city limits, on Country Club road, was burglarized. The burglar or burglars forced their way into the home and took several items according to Sherriff Bill Baird.
Sherriff Baird asks for anyone that has any information or that may have seen anything suspicious going on, to call the Sherriff's Department at 325-365-2121.
Sherriff Baird would also like to remind the public to lock up and secure your homes. You should have records of all your valuables, including Make/Model and Serial Numbers of all your electronics, guns, cameras, etc... Make notes of those items, and store that list in a safe place.
Yesterday's event is another in a string of burglaries that have happened in our area in the past week. Last week a home in Ballinger, and earlier this week a home in Olfen were both robbed.
All these robberies have happened during the day. The crooks are taking advantage of normal working hours and hitting the homes when they know people are at work.  Sherriff Baird also would like to remind the public to keep an eye out for anything suspicious such as strange vehicles at your neighbors house or anything else that is out of the ordinary.
If you should notice something out of the ordinary, call 911 or one of the local law enforcement offices. Runnels County Sherriff's Office @ 325-365-2121 or the Ballinger Police Department @ 325-365-3591.

Hoops, Dreams and Goals Lives up to Hype, Fanfare
4/3/2009
BIG SPRING – The NCAA Road to the Final Four may not lead to Big Spring’s Dorothy Garrett Coliseum, but the home of the Howard College Hawks and Lady Hawks hosted some of the best basketball in the area March 27th in a daylong tournament.
The “Fifth Annual Hoops, Dreams and Goals” basketball tournament pitted teams from the 23 counties served by West Texas Centers for MHMR in a friendly game of basketball, and spirited dance contests and cheerleading competitions.
Opening ceremonies kicked off in high gear when the Big Spring High School drum line entered the coliseum with their high energy and thunderous beat, West Texas Centers for MHMR CEO Shelley Smith, LMSW, said.
“They just add so much to the day. They get everyone keyed up and ready to play.”
Each team followed the drum line and entered the gym decked out in their respective uniforms and colors, followed by their cheerleaders, coaches and managers.
Smith and St. Rep. Joe Heflin (D) Crosbyton welcomed the crowd of 750 people before the first ball was tipped to eager players.
The Big Spring Heat basketball team defeated the Sweetwater Rattlers in the final and championship game of the daylong tournament. Each team – the Big Spring Heat, Sweetwater Rattlers, Snyder Wildcats, Ballinger Longhorns, Seminole and Brownfield Pink Panthers, and the Monahans and Pecos Warriors - worked their way through bracket play in hopes of reaching the big game that had Big Spring pulling away late in the fourth quarter sealing the win.
The Ballinger Longhorns won the best halftime show, and the Big Spring Heat won the Spirit Stick Award for maintaining a high level of enthusiasm throughout the day.
Each team was presented with a spirit stick award and a trophy, and all team members received participation trophies, Smith said. ALON USA also presented each team’s Most Valuable Player with $25 Wal-Mart gift cards.
“All of our players, cheerleaders and coaches are winners,” Smith said. “We wanted to recognize and award everyone for a job well done.”
New to the competition this year was the introduction of custom-made team uniforms for each player, Smith said.
The tournament coincides with Mental Retardation Awareness Month and is West Texas Centers for MHMR’s way of celebrating the month with their consumers and their families.
An added bonus to this year’s games will be photos and videos captured by Jim Purcell, President of State National Bank, and Midland-based ViaMedia, Smith said. “We are so appreciative of them taking the time to capture the memories of the event so that we can share this day over and over again.”
The tournament was sponsored by West Texas Centers for MHMR, Howard County ARC, Howard College, RX Services, KBST Radio, ALON USA and many other businesses, organizations and people from the counties served by West Texas Centers for MHMR.

Selkirk/Airmate to Phase Out Operations in Winters
4/2/2009 -by
Randall Conner, Economic Development Director

The local management and employees of Selkirk/Airmate in Winters learned Wednesday that the facilities and operation in Winters will be phased out over the next nine months. Selkirk is the largest employer in Winters with 130-150 employees and they make up about 7.5% of the local workforce.
“These are challenging times for our business. Due to the depressed housing market, we must size our business to the market and make these reductions,” said Bernard Roy, President of Hart & Cooley, the parent company. “The decision to close the Winters facility has been particularly difficult because we have had such a dedicated group of people working for us here.”
Charles Bahlman, President of the Winters Area Business and Industrial Corporation, the economic development organization for Winters, responded by saying, “We are disappointed to receive this news today about Selkirk, but we will work with management to make this a smooth transition for the employees. We have had a great relationship with local management and employees over many years.”
The community has an Economic Response Team that will work with the employees to help them secure other employment when the time arises. Support organizations will be available to assist the employees and their families. The Workforce Center is Abilene will assist with unemployment benefits, training for new jobs, and job placement.
Selkirk/Airmate was begun as Dry Manufacturing Company in 1958 by the Dry Brothers, who started several metal fabricating businesses in Winters. In 1969, the Drys sold the company to Wallace-Murray, headquartered in New York. After a series of corporate ownerships, a British company Tomkins PLC acquired Selkirk in 2006 and added it to their Hart & Cooley division of Grand Rapids, Michigan.
The Selkirk operations in Winters manufacture vents, grilles, registers, vent pipe, and chimney equipment for the air conditioning and heating industry. They also have a distribution center in Winters for many of the Selkirk and Hart & Cooley products which are shipped to much of the United States, Canada, and Mexico. The manufacturing and warehousing facilities in Winters include over 500,000 square feet of floor space.
“The Selkirk closing will definitely hurt Winters, but the community will rally around the employees and help them through the difficult times. Winters is a strong and caring community. This will make us work harder to make this a better community,” commented Lupe Guevara, President of the Winters Area Chamber of Commerce.

4/2/2009 -by Janet Wilson, Band Director

JH and HS bands competed at the Cisco Festival last week. This is in preparation for UIL contest to be held on April 15 and 16 in Brownwood. Bands were judged on a UIL standard with very high expectations. Bands were judged on their overall performance of 3 prepared tunes by 3 judges. The JH Band received a 2 2 1 on there performance (averaging to a Division II) and the HS received a 1 1 2 (averaging to a Division I) on their performance. After the concert performance the bands competed in Sight-Reading. In this section of the competition the band is given 7 minutes to look a piece of music that they have never played and then perform the piece. No playing may be done by the band before being judged. The director may talk about the music, count the music, point out important information but no playing may be done. When time is called the band plays the piece and is judged on their ability to read music for the first time. Both bands received Division I on the Sight-Reading. Congratulations to both bands for representing Ballinger and the Bearcat Band in a great way. Good luck at UIL!!!

Propane Fire at Buddy's Plant Plus
4/1/2009
About 3:30pm yesterday afternoon a 5000 gallon propane tank caught fire at Buddy's Plant Plus. The fire ignited while a crew was filling some smaller tanks for use inside the plant.

The shut off valves were immediately hit, which was a major factor in preventing a much larger fire and even a complete explosion of the tank. The tank remained intact and did not explode according to Mr. Clyde Kresta.

Ballinger FD was on scene to control the fire, but as Clyde Kresta stated, "there's not much you can do for a propane fire, except keep it cool. It has to burn itself out."  The propane continued to burn until around 9:30pm, when the fire finally used up all the propane that was fueling it.

(BallingerNews.com Photos, click for larger views)

The surrounding homes and area were evacuated by Sherriff Baird as a safety measure in case of a large explosion. With some luck and persistence, the Fire Department was able to keep this from becoming a major disaster.

The BallingerNews.com photo to the left shows the black smoke rising from behind the plant.
