1984 BISD Graduate Coming Home to Coach
2/25/2009
Superintendent Laura Strube presents Coach Aaron Keesee with some Ballinger Bearcat attire at the BISD School Board Meeting last night.
Aaron Keesee has accepted the position of BISD Athletic Director/Head Coach. He will be leaving class 2A Pilot Point ISD where he is currently the defensive coordinator for the Pilot Point Bearcats, yes that's right, the Bearcats! Along with Keesee's dedication to coaching football he also teaches History, as well as coaches Varsity Track.

Keesee is a family man and loves his wife Julie (Clifton), who herself is a 1985 graduate of Ballinger High School, very deeply. Aaron and Julie have 3 kids, A.J. a Sophomore, Chris a 7th grader, and Jaimee a 2nd grader, who are all involved in sports, if you can believe that. The Keesee's are looking forward to being home again and the idea of being around their families on a regular basis is what motivated them to jump on the opportunity to apply for this opening as AD in Ballinger. Everything fell into place at the right time as their desires to move back to this area had increased over the years.

Pictured left are Julie, Chris, A.J., Aaron and Jaimee Keesee. BallingerNews.com photo

Flashback to the fall of 1983 at Bearcat Stadium and you would find #12, Aaron Keesee
(pictured right), calling the plays in the huddle. Leading the team on the side lines was the well renowned coach, Randy Allen. In Keesee's 3rd year as starting quarterback, the Bearcats made it to the playoffs for the second straight season. That season the  Bearcats made it further into the playoffs than any other Bearcat team since the 1953 season. That year, the Keesee-led Bearcats won District, Bi-district, Area, and Regional, but were defeated in the State Quarterfinals by the Post Antelopes with a score of 35 to 21. The Bearcats finished that awesome season by outscoring their opponents 330 to 133 with a record of 12-1-1.

When asked about some of his memories on that loss to Post in the Quarterfinals, Coach Keesee said it was crushing. The Bearcats were on a big surge after the win against the #1 State ranked Littlefield Wildcats the prior week. With no time outs left and very little time on the clock, Keesee called the last few plays himself to finish off the drive that won the game against Littlefield. The following game against Post just proved that more obstacles can pile up against a team than can be overcome on any given Friday night. Ballinger had overcome some kickoff returns for touchdowns by Post, but it was a bad call by the officials that stood out to Coach Keesee as the momentum changing event in that game. This sounds all too familiar a fate as this past years' Bearcats experienced a similar issue in the playoffs.

Aaron Keesee graduated from Ballinger High School in 1984 decorated with many honors from his High School sports career including, 1st Team All District (2 yrs) and 2nd Team All District in Football. Aaron was also awarded 1st Team All District and All District player in Basketball, and ran track for 4 years where he qualified for Regionals one year.
After Ballinger High School Keesee went on to play football at Texas Tech where started as quarterback as a true Freshman in 1984 and played through 1987. Keesee transferred from Texas Tech after his Junior year to finish his football days at Eastern New Mexico University. Aaron decided to go back to school after Eastern New Mexico and graduated from Angelo State University in 1996 with a major in Kinesiology with an emphasis on teaching in History.

We wish to welcome the Keesee's back to Ballinger and hope that there are plenty of good things to celebrate in the football seasons to come with another Ballinger Bearcat coaching the Ballinger Bearcats.

And as we witness the changing of the guard here in Ballinger, we say farewell and good luck to Brent Brevard (pictured right #14), one good Bearcat and Coach. In return we welcome back another Bearcat as our new Coach, Aaron Keesee (pictured right #12). But have confidence in this Bearcat fans, there is one thing that doesn't change, it is that...THE TRADITION LIVES ON!

Texas A&M Student Selected by Monsanto to Participate in Future Ag Journalist Program
ST. LOUIS (February 24)—Miles, Texas, native Brooke Hoelscher, a junior at Texas A&M University, has been selected by Monsanto as one of two students to cover the 2009 Commodity Classic Feb. 25-28 in Grapevine, Texas, as a blogger for the Future Ag Journalist Fellowship Program.

Hoelscher will cover the event providing daily coverage and insights on the show on her blog, Brooke’s Commodity Insider at www.brookescommodityinsider.blogspot.com.

“I am thrilled to partner with Monsanto as a blogger at the 2009 Commodity Classic,” said Hoelscher, who is studying Agriculture Communications and Journalism. “I have been given the opportunity to network with industry representatives and enhance my professional development and communication skills. It is exciting to put what I have been learning to work at a premier agriculture trade show.”

Hoelscher is covering the event as part of the Future Ag Journalist Fellowship Program, which was created in 2006 and is sponsored by Monsanto. The goal of the program is to give talented ag communicators experience in covering events, utilizing new media tools and engaging leading ag industry and communication professionals and to provide them with experience that will allow them to flourish and develop their communication skills. Megan Ott from the University of Illinois will also blog at the event.

“Agriculture will always be a part of my life, and I’m looking forward to sharing my experiences with everyone,” Hoelscher said.

Hoelscher is chairwoman of Texas A&M’s Public Relations Committee for the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences Student Council and is the Texas A&M University Product Ambassador for Prima Tech USA, an animal health applicator company. She is the daughter of John and Karen Hoelscher.

As a company, Monsanto is committed to its growers and the future of the industry: youth. Through the fellowship program, selected students are given the opportunity to build on the skills they learn in their school and discover the additional skills needed to excel in the areas of their interest from industry professionals.

Monsanto realizes the importance of young agricultural communicators obtaining valuable on-the-job experience,” said Lee Quarles, Monsanto Media Communications Lead. “The fellowship program allows Brooke and Megan the opportunity to report on one of the leading agricultural trade shows in the United States, and we’re excited they will be able to meet several ag journalists and industry representatives as they prepare for careers in agriculture.”

As part of the students’ participation at the Commodity Classic, Monsanto encourages them to cover all aspects of the event.

If you’ve ever thought of running a marathon, writing a book, starting or selling a business, or any other personal or professional “dream”, mark your calendar to attend the Big Dream Gathering on Thursday, March 5, at 6 p.m. in the McNease Convention Center in San Angelo. Sponsored by the Texas Midwest Community Network, Mitch Matthews of Iowa will bring his BDG expertise to help us publicly share our dreams and possibly link such dreams to people with skills, know-how, connectivity and finances to make those dreams a reality. There is no charge for this fun and exciting “meeting of the minds and opportunities.”
Texas Midwest Community Network is a regional effort that promotes a cooperative approach to economic and community growth among its 43 member cities, including Winters. On February 3, nine business leaders from Winters were among 130 people representing rural cities in the TMCN region who met with legislators in Austin to discuss issues such as state services, tax reform and natural resources. Attending from Winters were Shelley Guevara with the City of Winters; Lupe Guevara, President of the Chamber Board of Directors; Amy Wheat of Wheat Energy Services; Brenda Briley, Human Resource Manager with Tradesman Truck Accessories; Rick Rickard, Administrator of North Runnels Hospital; Mary Lynn and Ronald Presley, County Commissioner; and myself.

Former Rowena Resident Elected Beef Board Vice Chair
Dierschke to chair Executive Committee, as well

2/6/2009
CENTENNIAL, Colo. - (February 6, 2009) – During its meeting in Phoenix on Jan. 31, the Cattlemen’s Beef Board (CBB) unanimously elected Texas beef producer Dan Dierschke, formerly of Rowena, to serve as vice chairman of the Board for 2009. Massachusetts dairywoman Lucinda Williams will serve as chairman, and Tom Jones of Arkansas was elected secretary/treasurer.
Dierschke served as the 2008 secretary/treasurer of the Beef Board, and has been a member of the CBB since his nomination by beef organizations in Texas and his appointment by the U.S. Secretary of Agriculture in 2006. Dierschke is a fifth-generation Texas ag producer. He and his wife, Marilynn, produce beef near Austin, Texas.
During his first three years as a Beef Board member, Dierschke served on committees including the Beef Promotion Operating Committee, the CBB Executive Committee, the CBB Audit Committee, and the Joint International Markets Committee.
He has been very active in other beef industry organizations, as well. He is a past chairman of the Texas Beef Council; former Texas Farm Bureau State Director; and a member of the board for the U.S. Meat Export Federation, for which he previously served on the Executive Committee. Other organizations on which he continues to serve include the Technical Subcommittee on Farm Land Preservation for USDA’s National Resources Conservation Service (Texas); as an appointee of the Secretary of Ag to the Agricultural Technical Advisory Committee for Trade in Animals and Animal Products; as an appointee of the Texas governor to the Texas Farm & Ranch Lands Conservation Council; and as an appointee of the Texas Comptroller to the Property Value Study Technical Advisory Committee.
In addition to serving as Beef Board vice chairman in 2009, Dierschke will serve on the Beef Board Executive Committee and the Beef Promotion Operating Committee.
As administrator of the national Beef Checkoff Program, the mission of the Cattlemen’s Beef Board is to build demand for beef through promotion, research and information programs of the national Beef Checkoff Program. That includes management of the widely recognized “Beef. It’s What’s for Dinner” campaign.
During its recent meeting in Phoenix, Beef Board members worked in joint committees with representatives of the Federation of State Beef Councils to prioritize strategies aimed at leveraging beef producers’ checkoff dollars on the research, educational and promotional efforts that they believe offer the biggest return on producers’ investment. In addition, the Board elected officers for 2009, as well as representatives to serve on the Board’s Executive Committee and the Beef Promotion Operating Committee. For more information about those elections, go to CBB Leadership Elected. For more photos and information about the goings on at the 2009 Cattle Industry Convention, go to www.beefboardmeeting.com.

Winters Chamber Of Commerce News
2/2/2009
Nominations needed and trail riders coming
It’s that time of year again…time to send your nominations for Man of the Year and Woman of the Year to be honored at the annual Chamber banquet on Sat., March 6. Winters is so blessed to have many wonderful community members who contribute to the well-being of so many. These may be front-and-center folks or behind-the-scenes men and women. So please take a minute to send us a brief description of your nominees to the Chamber at P. O. Box 662, Winters 79567.
The banquet this year will feature Mike Bodenchuk as keynote speaker. Mr. Bodenchuk's presentation should prove to be an entertaining and informative program. Watch for more details in next week’s Chamber News.
Congratulations to Gloria Abernathie who was honored with a retirement reception last Friday at Bedford Norman Insurance. Gloria began her work at Bedford Norman Insurance in March, 1981. The agency is one of the oldest businesses in Winters, having been established in the 1930’s when W. G. Bedford bought the agency from the Sheppard family.
Congratulations are also in order to Lawrence Bros. IGA supermarket which was selected as Business of the Quarter by the Chamber. The business is owned by the Lawrence family in Sweetwater, and is managed by Randy Couch.
First Baptist Church of Winters will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the dedication of the church sanctuary on Sunday, February 15. Former church members and guests are invited to services at 10:45 a.m., followed by a church lunch. Call FBC 754-5521 for more information.
Chamber directors and volunteers will host the San Angelo Trail Riders for an overnight stay on Monday, February 16. Riders will enjoy a hot meal at the Rock Hotel followed by a street dance. The community is invited to come join the fun, meet the riders, extend some hospitality and dance a little from 7-9 p.m. on Melwood Street between the Rock Hotel and the Z. I. Hale Museum. There is no charge for the street dance. Volunteers are needed to help feed more than 100 riders who will camp in our town. If you can help welcome, serve supper or breakfast, or clean up the facility, please call the Chamber at 754-5210. We can certainly use your help to make a good Winters impression on these special visitors.
I also want to remind readers that the Chamber is asking for donations to help purchase new letters for the community sign on the parking lot of IGA supermarket. We lost all but a very few letters in a house fire in December. Displaying messages has been a free service the Chamber has provided for numerous clubs and organizations for several years. Now we are looking to these same organizations and other community members to help replace the letters which cost about $325 per set. Any donations will be appreciated and may be sent to P. O. Box 662, Winters.
Concerned citizens are reminded of the town hall meetings to discuss the future of North Runnels Hospital.

Ballinger Elementary Jump Rope For Heart and Hoops for Heart
2/1/2009
Students at Ballinger Elementary are jumping and shooting at the chance to fight heart disease and stroke, our nation’s No. 1 and No. 3 killers. Participating in Go Red day on Friday, February 6th will kick off our fundraising. By wearing red we will help the American Heart Association support ongoing research and education about women and heart disease. Heart disease is the number 1 killer of American women.

Students will jump rope and shoot hoops to raise funds for the American Heart Association, which funds cardiovascular disease research and public and professional education programs.

Jump Rope For Heart and Hoops for Heart are co-sponsored by the American Heart Association and the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance.

The average heart beats 100,000 times each day. One of the best ways to take care of your heart is to make exercise a regular part of your everyday life. Jump Rope For Heart and Hoops for Heart teaches students how exercise benefits the heart and shows students that volunteering can be fun and beneficial to the whole community. They learn how they can make a difference by providing important community service and having a great time at this fun-filled event.

Money raised by the event will go to fund potentially lifesaving research and educational and community programs. Please help our students help others. When a student asks you to be a sponsor, support Jump Rope For Heart or Hoops for Heart with whatever you can afford to give.

Our students did a fantastic job last year by raising over $13,000. We were 15th in the state of Texas, and 56th in the nation in funds raised. We are hoping to beat our last year’s total
