New Playground Plan Needs Volunteers
7/21/2009
The Ballinger City Park Board is currently in the process of planning an exciting new custom-designed community-built playground project to be completed in the city park!
More than a playground, this project will be a community gathering space for everyone toenjoy. The particulars of the design will be left up to the experts—our children! Based on the children’s input and the history of our town a schematic design will be created on design day. Design Day will be determined at a later time. During design day, the children will be asked to draw and describe their “dream playground.” These ideas and suggestions will be used to create a custom-designed playground! Our hopes are that the entire community will join us for the community celebration and unveiling of the park sketch.
This playground will be organized and built by volunteers! In order to make the project a success, the park board is currently seeking other interested community members to join the playground steering committee. Anyone interested in helping make this vision
become a reality for the children of Ballinger and surrounding towns are invited to attend our meeting August 10th at 5:45 at the city hall board room. If you cannot attend the meeting but are interested in volunteering or learning more about this special project, you can print out a sign-up form (click here for form) and get it to a board member or contact Terilyn Bowman, Tammie Virden, Elaine Paske, Elizabeth Cook, or Stacy Hopper.

Sims - Powell Wedding Announcement
7/20/2009

Meredith Corinne Sims and William Clayton Powell, Jr. were united in marriage on June 27, 2009, at First United Methodist Church, Paint Rock, Texas. The double ring ceremony was officiated by Pastor Don Sessom.  The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Billy Sims of Paint Rock, Texas.  She is the granddaughter of Senator and Mrs. Bill Sims of San Angelo, Texas, and Mrs. Bill Forester and the late Mr. Bill Forester of Dallas, Texas.  The groom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. William Clayton Powell of Camilla, Georgia.  He is the grandson of Mrs. Doris Ragan, the late Mr. J. H. Ragan of Bay, Georgia, and the late Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Powell of Camilla, Georgia.
The bride wore a princess style gown with a strapless, sweetheart neckline and a slim A-line silhouette.  Reminiscent of a vintage gown, it was a layered confection of English tulle in antique ivory over vanilla Duchess satin.  Throughout the dress, the top layer of tulle was adorned with a vertical trellis of cameos, framing a bouquet of floral blossoms.  Each lace motif was highlighted with a delicate platinum metallic thread embroidery, sparkling Swarovski crystals, seed pearls and lace beading.  The lace motifs ended just above the frothy, layered tulle hemline which swept into a Tiffany length train, bustled for the reception and dance following the ceremony.  The veil of silk illusion was bordered by an intricate, platinum embroidered lace.
Her attendants wore their choice of neckline in a knee-length espresso brown Dutch satin dress.  Maid of Honor was Abigail Setzler, cousin of the bride, and Drue Hoelscher served as the Matron of Honor. Bridesmaids included Alban Millard, Lori Nurmi, sister of the groom, and Aja Smith. The Flower Girl was Olivia Nurmi, niece of the groom, dressed in an ivory satin tea length dress sashed with an espresso satin bow.  The groom's father served as Best Man. Groomsmen included David Griner, Matthew Lee, Joseph Rackley, and Jacob Sims, brother of the bride.  Remembered as Honorary Groomsman was Cleve Bostick.  Ushers were Wills Setzler and Giles Setzler, cousins of the bride.  Ring Bearer was Jacob Hovorak, outfitted as were the men in a black suit and black boots.
The bride is a graduate of Paint Rock High School and Texas State University, San Marcos, Texas, where she was a member of Alpha Delta Pi. She is employed as a Pre Kindergarten teacher at Hand- in-Hand Primary School in Thomasville, Georgia. The groom graduated from Westwood School, in Camilla, Georgia, and Georgia Southern University in Statesboro, Georgia, with a degree in construction management.  He is a member of the Kappa Alpha Order.  Clay has partnered with his father at Powell Paint and Body Shop, Camilla, Georgia.
The reception was held at Bentwood Country Club, San Angelo, Texas, with Johnny Dickinson and the Big Country Band providing the entertainment.  Following a honeymoon to Antigua, the couple has made their home in Thomasville, Georgia.

Hatlers are National Champs
7/15/2009
Sixth generation registered Hereford breeders Hadley and Judd Hatler have been living on Tulsa time since the brought home Champion and Reserve Champion honors from the Jr. National Herford Expo in Tulsa, Oklahoma Jully 4-11.
Twelve year old Hadley Hatler had the National Champion Illustrated Speech in the junior division, ages 10-13 with her speech titled "Lean Beef on a Budge."  While fourteen year old Judd Hatler had the Reserve Champion Illustrated Speech in the intermediate division, ages 14-17 with his speech titled "Trichomoniasis: Silent Calf Thief." The criteria for the contest was to develop a 3-5 minute speech related to the beef industry and use a minimum of one illustration, no electronic devices were allowed.
The Hatler's qualified for the national contest by winning their respective divisions at the state contest at the Texas Jr. Polled Hereford Association Show in June. The national competition was stiff as they competed against kids from across the United States including Oklahoma, Nebraska, Missouri, Kansas, Alabama, Arkansas, Louisiana, Illinois, Washington, Pennsylvania, New York, South Dakota, North Dakota, Oregon, and California.
Hadley received $100 and Judd received $75 in prize monies for their winnings.
In addition to the speech contest the Hatler's also competed in the Great American Certified Hereford Beef (CHB) Grill-off. In this contest they, along with teammates Dylan and Dalton Cleveland of Marshall, Texas, grilled CHB and then put together a meal while performing a skit for a panel of three judges. The skit included the history of Herefords, specifications for CHB, nutrition, and safe handling of beef. Their recipe was a Sauerbraten Salad Sandwich and the theme for the skit was "Herefordfest", a Hereford spin on Oktoberfest. In keeping with the German theme, the kids served German potato salad, kolaches and rootbeer to complete their meal as the Peanut Polka played in the background.
Hadley and Judd are the children of Jan and D'Ann Hatler of Ballinger. They are the grandchildren of Jack and Martha Hatler of Winters and Acorn and Glenda Adams of Big Lake.
