Outstanding Texas Students Selected for Summer 2009 Lone Star Leadership Academy Programs
5/27/2009 -by Monica Hayes

Outstanding Texas 5th-8th grade students from across the state have been selected to participate in Education in Action's summer 2009 Lone Star Leadership Academy programs in Dallas/Fort Worth (5th & 6th graders), Austin (6th & 7th graders) and Houston/Galveston (7th & 8th graders).  Selection for the Lone Star Leadership Academy is based on a student's demonstrated academic success and leadership ability, an educator recommendation and involvement in school/community activities.
During the weeklong residential Lone Star Leadership Academy programs, selected students join delegations of other distinguished students from across the state to develop leadership skills while learning about the great state of Texas.  Participants experience what they are learning in school through visits to historically, politically, scientifically and environmentally significant sites including the U.S. Bureau of Engraving and Printing, Fort Worth Stockyards National Historic District and Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza (Dallas/Fort Worth program), the offices of their state legislators, The Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum, bat watching on the Lone Star Riverboat and a Cowboy Cookout (Austin program) and NASA, the Houston Ship Channel, San Jacinto Battleground Monument and Moody Gardens (Houston/Galveston program) and much more.  Career speakers introduce participants to a wide variety of unique career and internship opportunities.
The Lone Star Leadership Academy provides a unique opportunity for outstanding students to learn about the Spirit of Texas and what it truly means to be from the Lone Star State.  Participants discuss what they learn, complete problem solving and decision-making simulations, exercise creativity and practice presentation skills in Leadership Groups.  In addition, participants have fun meeting other outstanding students from across the state of Texas and making new friends while adding to their resume of academic achievements, developing leadership skills and bringing home a wealth of information to supplement what they are learning in school.
Education in Action is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to empowering young Texans to become informed and active leaders in their communities.  Students involved in student government and service organizations are especially good candidates for Lone Star Leadership Academy programs.  Facilitator/student ratio is one to 10 and all facilitators are Texas teachers.  For more information about Education in Action or the Lone Star Leadership Academy, call 817-562-4957 or visit www.educationinaction.org.

Ballinger Jr High 6th Grader Alyssa Flanagan was included in this year's selection. Congrats Alyssa!!

Deer Me
5/26/2009 -BallingerNews.com Exclusive - photos by BallingerNews.com
Today at the Noon Rotary meeting held in its normal location at the Acapulco Restaurant, the members had a special presentation by a couple of Rowena 4H Members. Pictured right, Kelci Zentner and Lauren Michalewicz "practiced" their State Round-Up presentation in front of a live audience.
The two ladies are members of the Rowena 4H Club and will be competing at the State Roundup in College Station on June 14th with their presentation called "Oh Deer Me."

Due to the Swine Flu causing the District Competition to be cancelled in early May, they welcomed the opportunity to present this to a live audience where they could field questions afterwards, for practice.
The local Rotary Club, led by President Elect Stacy Hopper, were more than happy to have the ladies join them for lunch and demonstrate their presentation skills.
The Rotary is a service organization that raises money throughout the year with various raffles, and membership dues to help out with community projects and things such as scholarships for the graduating seniors.

Pictured left, Veterinarian Matt Belden, asking the ladies some questions.

Why I Support Relay for Life
5/26/2009 -by Carolyn Slaughter

My survival story is probably very different from most survivors.  I don’t have stories of illness because of treatment…I didn’t lose my hair.  I never had one chemo treatment, or one radiation treatment.  I only stayed in the hospital for two days after my surgery…and never looked back!!  I took one pill every day for five years and that was that!!  My cancer was absolutely the best that it could be…except for the fact that it was cancer!   So, here’s my story…
My routine mammogram wasn’t so routine in August, 1994.  By the time I got home from San Angelo and my appointment, then went to Wednesday night church, stopped by the football field for Bearcat football practice, and finally got home about 10:00 p.m., I had three messages to call back…one from my doctor, one from the radiologist, and one from the nurse who did the mammogram.  It was too late to return phone calls that night, so I waited until Thursday morning.  Because Danny was coaching football, I didn’t really want to bother him so I went back alone and assured him it was nothing to be alarmed about.  I remember sitting in my doctor’s office after meeting with the radiologist, and having more extensive mammograms, and being told that they were all 99% sure I had breast cancer.  They wanted to do a biopsy the following Monday morning…and my first reaction was that I couldn’t do it then…that was the first day the football team could practice in pads!!  My doctor convinced me that Danny would think I was more important than that, so we scheduled the biopsy.  There were no surprises from the biopsy, and after further tests to see if the cancer could be elsewhere, surgery was scheduled for Wednesday morning.  I had a radical mastectomy and was back at home on Friday…and back teaching school two weeks later!!  I must say that I had prayers from every town where we had coached previously, as well as Ballinger…and I will never doubt the power of prayer again!  That Sunday night before my biopsy on Monday, the entire church congregation circled around me and prayed, and I have never felt such a calming presence in my life!  I knew God still had plans for me, and felt that no matter the outcome, He was in control.  This August, I will celebrate my 15th year as a Cancer Survivor!  Praise God!!
Although my story isn’t one of traumatic times, it is still a story of surviving cancer.  Because of this, my main reason for participating in Relay for Life is my two children and my four grandchildren.  They have the genes from both sides of our family to develop cancer.  I want research to prevent that from ever happening.  My grandmother and my mother both had breast cancer…my mother’s only sibling had ovarian cancer, my grandfather, father, and brother all had cancer.  Both my father-in-law and my brother-in-law had cancer.  It takes money to continue research to find a cure.  I urge you to give generously for this worthy cause.

Quarter for a Cure
5/26/2009

The Junior High Team, Basic Training, is sponsoring a “Quarters for a Cure” fundraiser on the Elementary and Jr. High Campuses.  Students have been asked to drop a quarter in the teacher’s bucket that they wanted to see wear purple hair.  Elementary will have 2 Pretty in Purple winners and Junior High will have one.
The first lucky winner was Mrs. Chamberlain!  She showed true purple spirit on Friday morning when she happily received her new purple do.  Students watching cheered as her hair went from sandy blonde to bright purple.  Mr. Arrott applauded her by saying, “I think that’s a good look for you!  I think she needs escorts to parade her around the school.”  Students escorted her through the halls as she proudly showed off her purple hair.

Students, remember that the teacher with the most money will wear purple hair!  Tune in next week to see who the lucky Pretty in Purple winners are for both Elementary and Junior High.

Hunter Education Course
5/20/2009 -by Kory Perlichek

Hunter Education Course Will Be Held At The Mason Mountain Wildlife Management Area

Why do we need hunter education? Hunter education is more than just firearm safety. Hunter education produces responsible, knowledgeable, involved hunters. Ultimately, the mission of a hunter education program is to ensure the continuation of the hunting tradition. If you are looking to get certified in hunter education for some out-of-state hunting this fall or if you are wanting to get certified for the upcoming Texas hunting season, an online study plus a 1-day field course is being offered in Mason. The field course and final exam will be held at Mason Mountain Wildlife Management Area (WMA) on Saturday June 6th.

Each participant will be required to complete the TPWD online hunter education course and print out each chapter exam prior to the 1-day field course. Chapter exams must be turned in at the beginning of the June field course. The field course will start at 8:00 a.m. and will consist of a hunter skills trail, ethics presentation, live fire exercise, and a final exam. The cost is $15.00 per person. Any person wishing to attend this course must pre-register by June 3rd, 2009. There will be a limited number of participants, so please register as early as possible!! 1st Annual Curing Cancer Dance
5/19/2009
-photos by GorePhotographyShop.com
Mother Nature shows up just about anytime someone in Ballinger schedules a major event, it seems. She sent in some light rain Saturday evening, but was not able to dampen the spirit surrounding the 1st Annual Curing Cancer Dance. The show went on!
Elizabeth Cook organized one heck of an event. Elizabeth's motivation to be so involved and come up with such a great plan is that her mother is a 10 year survivor of Ovarian Cancer. That, and the fact that there's too many people suffering with this currently incurable disease were the motivating factors that drove Elizabeth to organize such an awesome show.
The City of Ballinger was on board with Elizabeth's project and allowed the airport to be used as the venue. The airport offered the perfect setting as it had a never-ending dance floor and an empty hangar to use for shelter should Mother Nature act up.
Six bands were pulled in and volunteered their time to raise money for finding a cure to cancer. It kicked off at 4pm and ended around midnight. It was 8 straight hours of good times with friends, good music and "The Greatest Little Town In Texas" hosted it.
With 200 tickets being pre-sold and 800+ people showing up, the dance raised over $7000 to be donated to the American Cancer Society. One can only imagine that the 2nd Annual Curing Cancer Dance will be just as big or bigger. Hopefully, sometime in our lifetime, the name will be changed to the "Annual Cancer is Cured Dance" and still be hosted right here in Ballinger, Texas!
Elizabeth would like to thank the following for their contributions to this year's event:

Sponsors-
Lonestar True Country 92.9, A-B Distributing, Tradewind Sound, 1st Community Federal Credit Union, Family Power Sports, Gandy Ink, Company Printing, Buddy’s Plant Plus, Graham Brothers Entertainment, Jeff Cook Farm Bureau, City Eye Care, Porter Henderson, State Farm Laurie Woodruff, KRUN 1400AM, RSC, 3D’s Plumbing, Ballinger’s National Bank, The Treadmill, Carl Rampage with Piece-A-Work Bar-BQ and Chili Team, Pizza Hut, Johnny Riojas

The Bands- Zach Edwards, Rio Grand, Darren Kozelsky, Cody Hughes Davidson Band, Brian Milson, and Harber and Miller Band. Thank you so much for donating your time.

West Texas Centers for MHMR Celebrates Mental Health Awareness Month
5/19/2009
BIG SPRING
– Artwork created by children served by West Texas Centers for MHMR is on display in Mental Health Centers across the 23-county service area during the month of May.
West Texas Centers for MHMR celebrates May as Mental Health Awareness Month, bringing attention to mental health with a special emphasis on Children’s Mental Health Week, said Shelley Smith, West Texas Centers for MHMR CEO.
The art contest invited children ages 3 through 12 to create an 8 x 11 ˝ -sized piece of artwork centered on the theme: “Take A Stand, Lend A Hand.”
This theme represents the movement underway to stop bullying, Smith said. “This is a huge problem in our communities. Art is such a powerful way for children and adults to express their feelings and emotions.”
“We thought this would be a good way to call attention to this problem in a way that the children could enjoy and take some ownership in and be excited to come to their Center.”
All entries were hung in each of the 15 mental health centers in the region.
Four winners and four runners-up were chosen from each region served by West Texas Centers for MHMR. Each winner will receive a $50 Wal-Mart gift card; the four runners-up will receive $25 gift cards.
Each Mental Health Center also will celebrate “Hats Off to our Patients Day.” Each center also will pick a day during the month for employees to wear a hat of his or her choice. A small banner will be displayed in each clinic on that day that says “Hats off to our Clients.”
“This is another way for us to put all our attention on our clients and let them know that we exist for them,” Smith said.
The Hats Off to our Patients Day Celebration in Gaines and Runnels Counties will take place Thursday, May 21, throughout the day at the County’s Mental Health Centers.
West Texas Centers for MHMR serves more than 2,000 people a month with mental illness or mental retardation in a 23-county area in rural West Texas.

Elementary puts on GREAT SHOW!!
5/18/2009

On Sunday the 17th, a group of 4th and 5th Graders from Ballinger Elementary put on a great rendition of Disney's "The AristoCats Kids". The flawless performance had the audience laughing and cheering constantly. Under the stage direction of Mrs. Geistmann and Mr. Arrott, and the musical direction of Mrs. Ellis, the youngsters didn't miss a line or a note.
The group put on an encore performance today that was just as good as the first performance. Today's show was a special performance for the school.

     Great job to everyone involved!!

DKB plays to home town crowd
5/18/2009 -BallingerNews.com Exclusive, photos by GorePhotographyShop.com

Darren Kozelsky and his band rolled into Bruce Field Saturday night the 16th to play at the 1st Annual Curing Cancer Dance in Ballinger, TX. The Darren Kozelsky Band was one of 6 great bands performing that night.
A Ballinger native coming home to sing to his hometown crowd was a treat to all those that have waited for Darren's homecoming show. It may have been a while since he's played a dance or concert in Ballinger (or Rowena), but no matter how much time has passed, one thing was evident...he's still the same Darren we grew up with, just with a cooler tour bus now.
Before the concert Darren mingled with many fans backstage, many of them also from the 1990 BHS graduating class. Post-concert was no different. Darren took time after the concert to head out to the dance floor and hang with old buddies and make some new friends.

Darren played tunes from his first album, "Let Your Mind Fly," as well as songs from his yet to be released sophomore album, "Arrivals and Departures." This sophomore album was recorded in Nashville, at Starstruck Studios, and produced by Phil O'Donnell.
The DKB Bus pulled out of Ballinger about midnight Saturday night heading back to Dallas. They headed off to Milwaukee to hit a few radio stations on the 19th, then off to Austin, MN before heading back to Texas.  It won't be too long before they are back in our area on June 5th at Blaine's Pub in San Angelo.
Darren and the band have been touring pretty hard lately on a country wide radio tour promoting the new album. They spend about 120-150 days on the road performing and promoting their music at the local radio stations. Darren's wife, Amy, and kids, Dane (8) and Quaid(4), travel with the band while they are on the road, when they can.
Darren's 2nd album is due out within the next couple weeks on iTunes, and also will be available for purchase online. Check Darren's webpage for more info on album release, tour dates, etc... click here.

Darren finished up the interview by saying that he was "very honored to be a part of this 1st Annual Curing Cancer Dance" and that it made it more special for him with the event being in Ballinger. He hopes that it will work out that he can be a part of the 2nd Annual Curing Cancer Dance that is yet to be scheduled for next year.
On behalf of the home town of this great person and awesome musician, BallingerNews.com wishes Darren all the success that he desires. Good Luck and come back soon DKB!

Ballinger 4H Consumer Results
5/18/2009

Runnels County 4-Hers recently competed in the District 7 4-H Consumer Decision Making Contest in Coleman. The 4-Hers spent the day using their consumer skills to determine which products were the best buy based on the senario given. Twenty 4-Hers including juniors, intermediates and seniors from Runnels county made the trip and competed against 4-Hers from eight other counties in District 7. The 4-Hers judged seven consumer classes including: emergency radios, gold jewelry, compact fluorescent light bulbs, pedometers, toothpaste, gift cards, and digital photo printing. In the intermediate and senior the 4-Hers were required to present oral reasons for their placings to the judges. The intermediates gave reasons for one class whereas the seniors had to give reasons for two classes. All of the 4-Hers worked hard for months preparing, meeting once a week, even during spring break!
Their efforts paid off! The 2nd place Senior team will be advancing to State 4-H Roundup in June: Judd Hatler, McKenzi Matschek, Lauren Michalewicz, and Kelzi Zentner (4th high individual). Morgan Pelzel placed 3rd high individual in the senior division and will also advance to State 4-H Roundup. The other senior team of Jordan Kalina, Abbey Multer, Valerie Albarado, and Paige Zentner placed 5th in the competition.
In the intermediate division the team of Jennifer Castleberry, John Glass, Hadley Hatler and Kaleigh Schniers placed 1st. Jennifer Castleberry was also 2nd high individual and Hadley Hatler was 5th high individual.
In the junior division there were two teams from Runnels County competing. The team of Bailee Busher, Daniel Gerhart, and Adam Multer placed 1st. Jessica Castleberry, Brendon Mikeska, and Avery made up the 6th place team. In individual placings, Bailee Busher was 3rd, Daniel Gerhart was 5th, and Avery Schniers was 6th.
This year's 4-H leaders for the Consumer Decision Making contest were Cynthia Glass, D'Ann Hatler, and Sandy Taylor.

 Emergency - Are You Prepared?
5/18/2009 -by Laurie Woodruff, State Farm® agent
Every year we face possible disasters – wildfires, earthquakes, tornadoes, hurricanes and winter storms. If a disaster strikes your home, are you and your family prepared? Do you know where important documents, medications, and essential supplies are in case you have to evacuate? Do you and your family know how you would get out of your house, what you would do with your pets, where you meet each other if you get separated? Do you have a single point of contact you can call to let others know you’re safe?
If not, now is the time to prepare. Don’t wait until faced with a disaster to begin thinking about emergency preparations.
No matter what potential disaster you might face, there are basic items everyone should have in their emergency kit:
• Flashlight
• Battery-powered radio (don’t forget extra batteries)
• Non-perishable food items and a manual can opener
• Bottled water
• Medications
• First-aid supplies
• Important family documents in a waterproof container
• One complete change of clothing and sturdy footwear

These items should be in a backpack or other easily portable bag that is stored in a safe place for quick retrieval. Each family member should have their own kit. At least once a year rethink your kit and replace batteries, food and clothes.
In addition to an emergency kit, be sure your family has an evacuation plan and communications plan. Every member of your household should be fully aware of what to do and where to go in case of an emergency.
Additional information on being prepared for a disaster is available from emergency assistance organizations or at statefarm.com®.

VFW Buddy Poppies
5/18/2009 -by Timothy "TC" Sirmans, Commander, Post 8119 Ballinger, TX
The semi-annual VWF Buddy Poppy will be handed out for donations, on the 22nd and 23rd of May, at the Shopping Basket and Wal Mart. Buddy Poppy's are assembled by Disabled Veterans in VFW hospitals and homes and then bought by the VFW Posts to distribute. All money donated goes directly to the disabled veterans.

Below is the explanation of how the Buddy Poppy came about:
Among all the flowers that evoke the memories and emotions of war is the red poppy, which became associated with war after the publication of a poem written by Col. John McCrae of Canada. The poem, "In Flander's Field," describes blowing red fields among the battleground of the fallen.
For more than 75 years, the VFW's Buddy Poppy program has raised millions of dollars in support of veterans' welfare and the well being of their dependents.
The VFW conducted its first poppy distribution before Memorial Day in 1922, becoming the first veterans' organization to organize a nationwide distribution. The poppy soon was adopted as the official memorial flower of the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States.
It was during the 1923 encampment that the VFW decided that VFW Buddy Poppies be assembled by disabled and needy veterans who would be paid for their work to provide them with some form of financial assistance. The plan was formally adopted during the VFW's 1923 encampment. The next year, disabled veterans at the Buddy Poppy factory in Pittsburgh assembled VFW Buddy Poppies. The designation "Buddy Poppy" was adopted at that time.
In February 1924, the VFW registered the name "Buddy Poppy" with the U.S. Patent Office. A certificate was issued on May 20, 1924, granting the VFW all trademark rights in the name of Buddy under the classification of artificial flowers. The VFW has made that trademark a guarantee that all poppies bearing that name and the VFW label are genuine products of the work of disabled and needy veterans. No other organization, firm or individual can legally use the name "Buddy" Poppy.
Today, VFW Buddy Poppies are still assembled by disabled and needy veterans in VA Hospitals.
The minimal assessment (cost of Buddy Poppies) to VFW units provides compensation to the veterans who assemble the poppies, provides financial assistance in maintaining state and national veterans' rehabilitation and service programs and partially supports the VFW National Home for orphans and widows of our nation's veterans.

In Flander's Field
by John McCrae
In Flanders Fields the poppies blow,
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky,
The larks, still bravely singing, fly,
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the dead.
Short days ago,
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved and now we lie,
In Flanders Fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe
To you, from failing hands, we throw,
The torch, be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us, who die,
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow,
In Flanders Fields.

Ballinger I.S.D. Summer Food Program Ready to Serve Children
5/18/2009 -by Laurie Belcher, Ballinger Elementary (325) 365-3588 ext 3006
Soon Ballinger students will be out for the summer, and that means hundreds of Runnel county children will be looking for places they can meet their friends, have fun and eat healthy snacks and meals. Ballinger LS.D. Summer Food Service Program is ready to meet the demand.

     Feeding Site: 800 Broad Ave.
     Time: 11:30 a.m.-l:00 p.m.
     Serving Days: June 8, 2009-July 3, 2009

The Texas Department of Agriculture Summer Nutrition Program is offered statewide by local sponsors who operate sites where children up to 18 years-old can get meals at no charge. The service is open to all children, regardless of income. People who are over age 18 and enrolled in school programs for people with disabilities also can receive meals at no charge.
Once again this summer, many of the sites that serve meals at no charge are being sponsored by school districts, local government agencies, churches and other private non-profit groups. The sites are located in areas where more than 50 percent of the children are eligible for free or reduced-price meals under the National School Lunch Program.
More than 2,000 summer food meal sites across Texas are expected to be in operation in places such as recreation centers, schools, parks, churches, day camps and community centers. Many of the sites will offer recreational activities for children as well as meals at no charge.
In 2008, more than 12.6 million meals were served to Texas children through the Summer Nutrition Program.
The most up-to-date information on Summer Food meal sites and hours of operation is available statewide by calling 2-1-1. For more details on the Summer Food Program visit www.summerfood.org.

Jackie Oliver - Survivor Spotlight Series
5/12/2009 -by Elizabeth Cook
Jackie Oliver is a woman with a story; she has beaten cancer not once but twice. In 1993 just after moving to Ballinger and adopting her daughter, Jackie was diagnosed with breast cancer. Jackie went back and forth from Temple, Texas to San Angelo to seek treatments. After beating breast cancer and being a seven year survivor in 2000 Jackie was diagnosed with cervical cancer. Jackie once again prepared herself for the battle. She had to undergo hormonal therapy and radiation in San Angelo. Jackie was going to San Angelo every day, after teaching her kindergartners, to receive her treatments.  By the time Jackie beat cervical cancer she had go through a mastectomy, a hysterectomy, hormonal treatment, and radiation.  Now in 2009 Jackie is a 16 year breast cancer survivor and a 9 year cervical cancer survivor!  She has to go to the doctor still once a year for checkups.  When I asked Jackie if she had any words of wisdom for others going through cancer this is what she had to say. “Cancer is a life changing event that you have no control over.” With family, friends, and faith in God you can make it through.” “Do your research!” and the last one “Power of Prayer”

Last week was Teacher's Appreciation Week and boy were things hopping around the Ballinger Elementary School. the children had "Hawaii-I-Love-My-Teachers-Day." They dressed in flowery colorful shirts, shorts, and flip flips. the PTO made an awesome meal for teachers and staff. Shish-kabobs with vegetables and chicken or shrimp, loads of vegetables and desserts that were just too good. Thanks to Mrs. McKinnon and all the other great ladies that are a part of our PTO. You made our jobs easier. We have the most energetic and dedicated teachers in the district. One more reason Ballinger ISD is number one! There were several teachers that really went all out dressing for the occasion, but Mrs. Wink (pictured right) won the best costume as a palm tree. Way to go Mrs. Wink!! the excitement was more than the children could stand. the cafeteria was decorated for a feast. The ladies serving had on grass skirts (pictured above), flowers in their hair, and leis around their necks. We put dots on random trays and gave away prizes. Thanks to Dollar General for their great donations of books, also. The kids had a choice of the netted table or they could have ice cream. the children were buzzing round all day. The winners all got their picture taken and promise of another dot day.  All had fun and i think all are ready for the summer that is soon approaching. (See more photos on the Faces page)

Local Farm Bureau Leaders Visit Nation's Capital
5/10/2009
Don and Sherran Geistmann of the Runnels County Farm Bureau were among more than 130 local leaders of the Texas Farm Bureau who traveled to the nation's capital on March 31-April 3 for discussions on agricultural issues.
"Seeing this first hand and actually talking to our elected officials is vital, "said Geistmann.  "This is a critical time for America and for the agricultural industry."
Geistmann said the implementation of the farm bill, reopening Cuba as a full fledged market for U.S. products, addressing the increasing regulation of agriculture, and the Columbia and Panama Free Trade agreements were all on the visiting farmers' and ranchers' agenda.
"We believe Congress and the new administration made a mistake by eliminating the pilot program that allows Mexican trucks to operate on this side of the border because it technically puts the U.S. in violation of NAFTA," Geistmann said.
That program, recently terminated, caused Mexico to impose more than $2 billion in tariffs on a wide range of products, including some agricultural goods.
"Mexico is Texas' number one trade partner, and we think it's just bad business to risk a trade war in this fragile economy,"  Geistmann said.  "This was a good time to be in Washington for discussions on this and other important agricultural issues."
The Farm Bureau group represented every region and many of the crops produced in the Lone Star State.

Football Poem
5/8/2009 -by Steven Jalomo, BJHS Student

"Football" by Steven Jalomo

Wearing the school colors, black and red.
Ready to see if they're as good as everyone said.

Kicker's hand goes into the air.
Ready to kick the ball all the way down there.

Lights on the field, lights on the grass.
Quarterback giving plays and getting ready to pass.

A strong linebacker staring you down.
Though you know you can take him to the ground.

The ending of the game has come around.
We're making the last touchdown.

Your team is victorious, receiving a golden-plated ball.
This is all just in a game, a game known as football.

Steven is an eighth grade football player at Ballinger Junior High. He submitted this
piece for a literary magazine the eighth graders are creating in Mrs. Brevard's class.

Taylor County - Site for Estate Planning Seminar
5/5/2009
ABILENE - Planning for the unexpected is the theme of a multi-county Texas AgriLife Extension Service estate-planning seminar set for May 18 in Abilene.
The seminar will be from 9 a.m.-3:30 p.m. in the Big Country Hall located next to the AgriLife Extension offices in Taylor County, 1982 Lytle Way in Abilene.
“This seminar is meant to help with personal estate planning, whether you’re starting from scratch, or just need to tweak an existing plan,” said Hoss Sasin, AgriLife Extension agent in Callahan County and a seminar planner.
Dr. Wayne A. Hayenga, an AgriLife Extension economist and Texas-licensed attorney at College Station, will be the featured speaker. He will address estate-planning laws, wills, trusts, life insurance and tax options.
“Estate planning is an extensive process that can vary from year to year as the laws change,” Sasin said. “So it’s essential to have a good plan in place to protect your estate even after you are no longer around to care for it. This seminar is designed to familiarize participants with the various options and processes they’ll need to plan an estate prior to seeking often expensive legal counsel.”
The seminar is being conducted by the AgriLife Extension offices in Taylor, Callahan, Shackelford and Jones counties.
Individual registration is $10 by May 12 and $15 thereafter. The fee includes a catered lunch.
For more information and to register, contact the AgriLife Extension office in Callahan County at 325-854-5835

Soggy Mayfest was still FUN!
5/4/2009 -by Jean Boles, Winters chamber of Commerce
Mayfest a little soggy but still great fun
Although the weather was wet and cold, the mood at Mayfest was upbeat and fun. (We West Texas folks know better than to complain about any sort of rain). Arts and crafts sellers as well as food vendors reported brisk business throughout the day. Children were treated to several new games and activities this year, and the softball tournament involved 19 teams, bringing some new folks to town for the weekend. Doug Wheat, of Wheat Energy Services, chaired a two-day tennis tournament involving 35 players, and reported a super fun time. Softball and tennis results and other Mayfest news will be published at a later date.
Thank You to everyone who participated in this year’s event. Special thanks to those to donated their time, services and merchandise. The Chamber deeply appreciates Police Chief Nathan Johnson and his police force for helping keep Mayfest safe and fun for everyone.
Don’t forget to vote this Saturday. Voting is one of our greatest privileges and rights. Put your opinion to work. And if you don’t vote, please don’t complain about our school, hospital or city.
Mother’s Day is this Sunday, May 10. Please shop locally for that special mom in your life. Our local businesses desperately need your support. Here in Winters you can get all sorts of great gifts, including a massage, a new outfit, some jewelry, skin care, plants, a meal or two, something for the house or yard, or several other things from which to choose. Many places offer free gift wrapping and a friendly exchange policy. And if you need a little help with making a selection, why not get her a gift certificate – one size fits all.
Please remember that the city-wide clean up will be from Friday, May 8, to Friday, May 15. I’ve hard many times that each person either contributes or contaminates. Let’s all do our part to make our town sparkle and shine. City Manager Aref Hassan says there will be two large dumpsters available to the public; one in the parking lot behind City Hall and the other on the Bishop & Sons lot on the corner of North Main and College. Some restrictions apply, and please be prepared to show your driver’s license and the stub of your water bill. Some of the items not allowed are tires, batteries, appliances, hazardous materials, or any type of petroleum products. For more information, call City Hall at 754-4424.
I hope you’ve noticed the new “Welcome to Winters” flags on display along the light poles along downtown Main Street. Our city employees work very hard to make our town a more attractive place to live. We’ve got some new folks and businesses coming to Winters, and we want to be proud of our community.
Applications are being accepted for the position of Office Manager here at the Chamber. This position is a part-time job, approximately 25 hrs. per week. Anyone interested in applying may leave their application and resume here or drop it off with Chamber Board President Lupe Guevara at Debbie Bryan Insurance. For more information, call the Chamber at 754-5210 or Lupe at 754-5445.
