Ballinger, Dec. 31, 2013—The Old Texas Theater will be opening for business on January 17th, 2014. The Grand Opening will be held at 115 N 8th in Ballinger. “Comedy In High Definition”, a live variety act featuring world class juggler and Guiness World Record Holder Mark Angelo, will headline the event. The event will also include a ribbon cutting, a skit performed by local teens, and a short film presented by Ballinger High School Graduate Evan J. Wilson, now a videographer for Texas Tech University.
Originally known as the Palace Theater, the building has not been operational since the late 1970’s, but has been completely renovated over the past 18 months. Plaster coated the walls and was chipped off by hammer to real the locally quarried stone underneath. The stage was extended and given a proscenium arch facade. An addition was made to the back of the building to accommodate storage, an office, dressing rooms, and staff restrooms. Countless hours of plumbing and electrical work had to be done. The balcony has been transformed into a multi-level lounge area. Ramps were installed in the front doors to be wheelchair accessible. The lobby has gotten a significant makeover. Custom granite countertops, custom built cabinets and extensive woodwork complete the transformation. There was also the addition of the kitchen and wait-station. Kael Denton, General Manager, says “Our hope is to provide a variety of services to a variety of people. We aim to be so much more than ‘just a movie theater’.”
