AUGUSTA (WGME) — A new recommendation could knock a transgender sports initiative off the ballot this November.
The recommended decision from the Secretary of State’s Office says the petition campaign fell short of the signatures needed to qualify.
Investigators found widespread problems with petition circulation, including signatures gathered without circulators present and forged names.
The proposed ruling would invalidate more than 1,000 additional signatures, dropping the total below the threshold required to be on the November ballot.
The initiative would restrict school sports participation and facilities based on sex.
A final decision is expected by Tuesday.
