The AHEC Board of Directors reported that the 2026 Presidential Excellence Awards at UT Health San Antonio recognized outstanding leaders whose work strengthens the institution’s mission in education, research, clinical care and community engagement.
Among this year’s distinguished honorees was Dr. Julie Bazan, Executive Director of the Area Health Education Center of the Mid Rio Grande Border Area, as she celebrated for her exceptional contributions to health education, workforce development and community well being across South Texas.
The Presidential Excellence Awards represent one of UT Health San Antonio’s highest institutional honors, acknowledging individuals whose service and leadership create lasting impact.
This year’s ceremony, held on April 14 at San Antonio Botanical Garden, brought together leaders, faculty, staff and regional partners to highlight achievements that advance health equity and strengthen the future of health care in the region.
Bazan was recognized for her leadership in expanding educational pathways for students pursuing health careers, fostering binational and regional collaborations and championing programs that address mental health, workforce shortages and access to care in underserved communities.
In presenting the award, UT Health leaders Taylor Eighmy, PhD, President, UT San Antonio; and Francisco G. Cigarroa, MD, Senior Executive Vice President for Health Affairs and Health System, emphasized Bazan’s commitment to service, collaboration and student success. They noted that her work exemplifies the values of the Presidential Excellence Awards and reflects a deep dedication to improving health outcomes throughout South Texas.
Colleagues and community partners commended Bazan’s ability to unite schools, health care providers, nonprofits and regional organizations to create sustainable, community-driven solutions and innovative initiatives.
“Under her direction, AHEC has broadened its reach, offering innovative programs that empower youth, support families and build a culturally responsive healthcare pipeline,” AHEC said in a statement. “Students who have participated in AHEC programs consistently share stories of mentorship and opportunity, crediting Dr. Bazan with inspiring them to pursue careers in health care.
