After a quick introduction to technique, participants will row on Humboldt Bay in an Olympic-style, eight-oared racing shell.

Space is limited and pre-registration is required. Register for a two-hour session at www.hbra.org.

Earlier morning slots have a better chance of calm water.

Adults and youth ages 12 and up are welcome. Participants under 18 must be accompanied by an adult.

The Humboldt Bay Rowing Association boathouse is on the Eureka Waterfront in Halvorsen Park near the Samoa Bridge.

HBRA will hold three two-week summer camps for juniors, beginning June 15, July 6 and July 27. Adults can join a six-week Adult Beginners Clinic starting July 6. To register for Learn to Row or for the summer rowing programs, visit hbra.org or leave a message at 707-267-7976.

Summer camp

This summer the Humboldt Arts Council will host a series of youth art workshops at the Morris Graves Museum of Arts for third- to eighth-graders.

Summer workshops are scheduled for kids in third through fifth grades, July 14 to 17, and sixth- through eighth-graders, Aug.11 to 14.

During these workshops, students become museum artists residents, sharing studio time with friends and hosting a culminating showcase in the youth gallery of all their artwork.

Participants will spend their mornings touring the museum galleries and discussing art history. After the inspiring morning and demonstrations of technical art skills, students will do hands-on projects in a positive, encouraging environment. By the end of the week families and friends will be invited to a showcase of student work.
