PORTAGE, Wis. (WMTV) - Community members gathered at Blue Star Park in Portage Monday morning to honor veterans and fallen service members during the city’s annual Memorial Day ceremony.
Among those recognized was 99-year-old World War II U.S. Navy veteran Russ Wyman.
Born and raised in Portage, Wyman enlisted in the military in 1943 at just 17 years old. Friends and fellow veterans say he has remained a well-known and respected member of the community throughout his life.
After serving during World War II, Wyman spent more than 40 years working for the railroad in Portage. Outside of work, he spent many years playing baseball and adult softball, where he was often known by the nickname “Shadow.”
David Duvall, a past commander of VFW Post 1707, described Wyman as someone who represents a generation defined by service and commitment.
“There aren’t that many people around anymore that have that same outlook on life,” Duvall said. “That’s Russ Wyman. I want to be just like him when I grow up.”
The ceremony at Blue Star Park included remarks from veterans and community leaders, as well as a traditional gun salute honoring those who lost their lives serving the country.
For many in Portage, Wyman’s story remains a powerful reminder of what it means to serve the country.
