Colorado farm picked to grow playing surfaces for World Cup stadiums in several US cities

PLATTEVILLE, Colo. (CNN) – When the World Cup kicks off across North America, some of the tournament’s matches will be played on grass grown near Denver.

Green Valley Turf was selected to grow the playing surfaces for stadiums in Atlanta, Dallas and Houston.

On Monday, crews harvested and rolled turf destined for Houston’s NRG Stadium.

The Kentucky bluegrass and perennial rye mix was loaded onto refrigerated trucks and sent south for installation.

“It seems a little strange that the grass is coming all the way from Colorado, but those buildings will be climate controlled at 70 degrees throughout the whole tournament, so they needed a cool season grass which thrives in our environment that’s near impossible to grow closer to where the venues are,“ Green Valley Turf owner Joe Wilkins III said.

The company expects it will take about two dozen truckloads to complete the Houston field.

Producing professional playing surfaces is familiar territory for Green Valley Turf. It also grows fields for major league teams and international soccer events.
