The Northwoods League season opened Monday with Memorial Day baseball, and the La Crosse Loggers started the year with a 16-10 win over the Duluth Huskies at Copeland Park.
Former Milwaukee Brewer Jeff Cirillo threw out the first pitch before the game as the guest of the day. The opener also marked the first game under new Loggers field manager Justin Ramsey.
Duluth jumped out to an early lead in the top of the first. Vinny Smith drove in the game’s first run with an RBI double, and Reagan Reeder followed with an RBI single to make it 2-0.
La Crosse answered in the bottom of the inning with a run to cut into the deficit. The Loggers later tied the game at 4, then took the lead in the bottom of the fourth. Duluth responded with three runs in the fifth to move back in front, but La Crosse’s bats heated up after that, scoring five runs in the sixth and four more in the seventh on the way to the 16-10 final.
The Loggers and Huskies will meet again Tuesday, May 26, with La Crosse also hosting home games May 27 and May 28.
