NEW HARTFORD, N.Y. -- A new playground at Sherrillbrook Park is now officially open following a ribbon-cutting ceremony.
The Town of New Hartford held the event at 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
Town officials, parks and recreation staff, highway department staff, families and community members were in attendance.
Town Supervisor James Messa said that the ribbon cutting marks the completion of a project that has taken a couple of years to finish.
He said the playground’s opening was delayed after the Town removed a pavilion for safety and to improve visibility between two play areas.
Messa described how the changes allow parents to watch their children from both playgrounds.
Additional work included new fencing and soil improvements to further enhance safety, he added, and features sensory elements.
Oneida County Executive Anthony Picente explained that the project received $200,000 in funding from the County through the American Rescue Act, which was created to help counties and municipalities with projects impacted by the pandemic.
Picente described the playground as a place where families can gather, children can play safely and everyone can enjoy quality equipment in a welcoming environment.
He said that investing in spaces like this supports the County’s ongoing efforts to make towns and villages great places to live, work and play.
