Union attorney alleges political retaliation at Webb County Sheriff’s Office

WEBB COUNTY, Tex. (KGNS) - An attorney for a Texas law enforcement union alleged retaliation and harassment inside the Webb County Sheriff’s Office tied to deputies’ political affiliations during public comment at Webb County Commissioners Court on Tuesday, May 26.

John Bradshaw, a staff attorney with the Combined Law Enforcement Associations of Texas (CLEAT), read a statement saying the organization represents about 29,000 members statewide and works with roughly 120 affiliated locals, including the Webb County Deputy Sheriff’s Association.

Bradshaw said CLEAT was recently contacted by members who claim high-ranking sheriff’s officials have harassed union members because of who they support politically.

Bradshaw warned CLEAT will “rigorously defend” its members if there is any retaliation, including terminations or transfers, based on political views or candidate support. He said those beliefs are constitutionally protected and “has no place in the workplace.”

After the public comment ended, Commissioner Jesse Gonzalez, who represents Precinct 1, attempted to clarify whether the concerns involved political activity “on the clock” versus after hours.

Nathan Bratton of the Webb County Civil Legal Division advised the court not to engage in conversation during public comment and cautioned officials to keep their remarks within the agenda.

He said any further discussion should be brought back as a future agenda item.
