The old Eddie Cochran song “Summer Time Blues” bemoans the plight of young people who can’t get a job during the hotter months of the year.
But that message may be lost in Florida, as several cities are among the best to find work during Summer months.
A new study by WalletHub found Fort Lauderdale and Orlando are in the top 10. WalletHub analysts looked at 182 of the largest metropolitan markets in America and used 21 key indicators to compile the ranking. WalletHub measured employment outlook, affordability, job friendliness, median income of part-time workers, and other factors to decide the list.
Fort Lauderdale placed eighth with a score of 55.08. Fort Lauderdale had the 12th-best youth job market ranking and was 14th in social environment and affordability.
Orlando, flush with tourist attractions and theme parks, came in 10th with a score of 54.72. The Central Florida metro placed 18th regarding its youth job market, and ranked 11th for social environment and affordability.
South Burlington, Vermont, topped the overall list with a score of 60.39. Scottsdale, Arizona, was second, with a score of 59.99, followed by Rapid City, South Dakota, with a score of 57.67.
WalletHub analyst Chip Lupo said the job outlook is pretty upbeat heading into the Summer across America.
“It’s a great time to get a summer job, considering that a lot of places are still having labor shortages and may increase their compensation as a result,” Lupo said. “In addition to good pay and good work conditions, the best cities for summer jobs also have attractive features like short commute times and fun activities to engage in outside of work.”
Tampa also was ranked in the top 25. Tampa came in 23rd, with a score of 50.71. Tampa’s youth job market ranked 42nd in the nation. The city ranked 29th for social environment and affordability.
Four other Florida cities made the top 100. St. Petersburg came in 52nd, Miami was 66th, Pembroke Pines was 74th and Cape Coral was 82nd.
