Each May, the nation recognizes Older Americans Month, a tradition dating back to the early 1960s that honors the contributions of older adults and the factors that shape their well‑being. This year, it also highlights a broader shift: as people live longer and healthier lives, the need for more supportive, transparent, and personalized health care has never been greater.

At Blue Shield of California, this focus is central to our mission.

As a nonprofit health plan, we’re committed to ensuring older adults have the coverage, support, and confidence they need not just to manage their health, but to live fully and independently. That means going beyond traditional coverage to create experiences that are simpler, more predictable, and aligned with what seniors actually need.

“We support our members through all stages of life,” said Alex Uhm, vice president and general manager of Medicare at Blue Shield of California. “This includes helping seniors navigate health benefits during major life transitions like retirement, and offering tools and resources for happy and healthy aging.”

Meeting seniors where they are

Many seniors are navigating a complex healthcare system while managing chronic conditions and rising costs, and evaluating coverage options that must deliver both stability and flexibility. Expectations are also changing. Older adults want clearer information about costs, more practical guidance for care decisions, and experiences that feel simple and connected when accessing care. These realities continue to influence how our Medicare plans are designed and improved.

A more connected Medicare experience

Blue Shield continues to adjust its Medicare offerings to address these needs and best serve our members, customers and partners, across three key areas:

  • Affordability and predictability. We’re focused on helping members better plan for their healthcare needs with:
    • Stable coverage options through our Medicare Supplement (Medigap) plans
    • Cost‑effective prescription drug plans designed to support medication adherence
    • Clearer benefit structures to reduce surprises and increase confidence
  • Access and flexibility. We know that choice matters — especially for seniors managing ongoing health needs:
    • Our Medicare Supplement plans provide the freedom to see any provider that accepts Medicare, without network restrictions
    • Our Medicare Advantage plans give seniors a higher level of support to help with finding providers, scheduling appointments, and completing follow-up items such as labs or referrals
    • Options for every budget, including $0 premium Medicare Advantage plans
    • Strong provider access and national coverage both support continuity of care across life transitions
  • Whole‑person support. Health and well‑being go beyond clinical care. That’s why our plans include benefits that support everyday life, such as:
    • Vision, dental, and hearing coverage
    • Transportation support
    • Fitness and community programs like SilverSneakers, to help members stay active and connected

Blue Shield is also working to improve how members navigate their benefits, so members can more easily understand and use them.

Building trust through consistency

Trust develops over time through consistent experience, and it’s reflected in how members choose and stay with their coverage. For the fifth consecutive year, Blue Shield holds the number one position in the individual Medicare Supplement market in California*, reflecting the consistency of our offerings and the trust members place in us to support their health over the long term. “We’re committed to delivering the access to high-quality care and reliable coverage seniors need, while evolving as members’ needs change,” said Gary Culp, senior vice president of Government Markets at Blue Shield of California.

This Older Americans Month, we’re proud to stand alongside the seniors we serve — and the families, providers, and partners who support them every day — because empowering older adults isn’t just about coverage, it’s about creating a healthcare experience they can trust now and in the years ahead.
