HAAPIFEST, Baddlands Fest, 'Misery,' 'Spamilton' top Houston events

The Houston Asian American Pacific Islander Film Festival (HAAPIFEST) returns for its latest edition, featuring such films as "Light of the Setting Sun," a documentary about a Taiwanese family, "Southeast Asian American Journey," a five-part docu-series focusing on Southeast Asian refugees; and Houston filmmaker Michelle Mower's coming-of-age saga "The Never List." It opens Friday with "The Rose: Come Back to Me," a documentary about the South Korean rock band, The Rose. Some films are also available online. For the full list, go to haapifest.org

Speaking of Asian films, the River Oaks Theatre wraps up its series on contemporary Asian action films Saturday with the Indian beatdown saga, "Kill." Set on a speeding locomotive where our hero, played by the singularly named Lakshya, has to take on a cargo of brutish bad guys, "Kill" is what you would get if you slammed "John Wick" and "The Raid" together and stuck them in an enclosed space of a train. It's what the movie "Bullet Train" should have been.

The Alley closes its current 2025-26 season with William Goldman's acclaimed adaptation of Stephen King's mega-hit "Misery." The production stars Elizabeth Bunch as Annie Wilkes, the obsessive fan who imprisons writer Paul Sheldon, played by Chris Hutchison.

Shinyribs may be based in Austin but frontman/founder Kevin Russell is from Beaumont and his Gulf Coast roots are at the fore in the band's mix of soul, funk, rock and country. The group is known for its lively shows and this Houston stop at the Heights Theater on Saturday should be no exception.

Claudio Monteverdi's Italian opera "L'Orfeo" has not been performed in Houston in more than 25 years. The classic work, sometimes referred to as the first great opera, returns this weekend featuring Karim Sulayman in the title role. This is a new production from Ars Lyrica, in collaboration with the New York Baroque Dance Company.

Stages is offering a quirky double-feature of sorts. The company is staging "Spamilton," the parody of Lin-Manuel Miranda's "Hamilton," with Miranda's own spoof mini-musical, "21 Chump Street." You can't beat that for some early summer season entertainment.

New York's lauded Emi Makabe Quartet, with a distinctive blend of jazz, Japanese folk music and global rhythms, is making a debut trek around the U.S. and coming to Texas. Houston's Jason Moran played on their 2025 album, "Echo."

Baddlands Fest, sponsored by BADDWKND, is a touring arts/culture/technology festival that seeks to offer a space for a variety of arts, music and displays of culture. This weekend, it's coming to Houston's Sawyer Yards where there will be a vendor market featuring local businesses, art exhibition with works from Houston artists as well as music and DJ performances.
