AUGUSTA — A new University of New Hampshire poll shows presumptive Democratic Senate candidate Graham Platner with a nine-percentage point lead over incumbent Republican Sen. Susan Collins.
The Pine Tree State Poll shows Platner at 51% and Collins at 42%. Only 6% say they are undecided, with 2% choosing “another candidate.”
Broken down by party, 91% of Democrats would vote for Platner and 87% for Collins. Independents are divided, with 47% choosing Collins and 44% Platner, the pollsters noted.
The results come less than two weeks before the June 9 primary where Platner, a Sullivan oyster farmer and military veteran, faces David Costello of Brunswick, who spent decades working in state and federal government.
Platner became the presumptive nominee in late April after Gov. Janet Mills dropped out citing a lack of money amid poor poll results.
The likely Collins versus Platner matchup in November is expected to be expensive and hotly contested. Democrats are targeting Collins, who is seeking her sixth term, in a bid to flip the Senate from red to blue.
The UNH poll is based on a sampling of 1,397 Mainers who responded to an online survey between May 21 and May 25. It has a margin of error of 2.6%.
The UNH results are similar to those released last week by Pan Atlantic Research.
That poll showed Platner at 48%, Collins at 41%, with 11% undecided.
