MADISON, Wis. (WBAY) - As melanoma awareness month closes, dermatologists at UW Health are warning the public against the use of indoor tanning beds.
They are also suggesting people cover up if they head outside due to UV exposure from sunlight.
Experts say even one session in a tanning bed can increase the risk of melanoma by 30% and non-melanoma skin cancers by nearly 40%.
Those who choose to take advantage of the warm weather should apply broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 to 50 and reapply it every one to two hours.
“We do want kids and adults to be outside and to enjoy this beautiful weather, but we want you to do it safely,” said Dr. Lisa Arkin, dermatologist with UW Health.
To best decrease risk when it comes to UV exposure, experts suggest avoiding being outside in direct sunlight during peak hours between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. and wearing clothing specifically marked for sun protection.
