Opera San José is presenting a free concert on June 20 at the San Jose Municipal Rose Garden, featuring an Italian tenor and his former student, a soprano who was in the company’s recent production of Verdi’s “La Traviata.”
Pasquale Esposito and Victoria McDowell, the teacher and student in question, will perform during “Opera in the Rose Garden” along with the Opera San José Orchestra, conducted by the company’s music director Joseph Marcheso. Other performers include sopranos Madison Hatten and Nicole Koh; tenors Alex Boyer, Edward Graves and Ben Gulley; baritones Eugene Brancoveanu and Luis Alejandro Orozco; and bass-baritone Philip Skinner.
The family-friendly concert is being underwritten by Applied Materials and the San Jose Sports Authority as part of SJ26’s celebration of the FIFA World Cup. “As the FIFA World Cup brings the world to our doorstep, we’re showing that San Jose is a global destination for both world-class sport and world-class art,” Opera San José CEO and General Director Shawna Lucey said in a release.
The concert will feature selections from “Die Fledermaus,” “Pagliacci,” “Rigoletto,” “Carmen” and “The Pearl Fishers.” Check-in begins at 5 p.m., and the concert runs from 6-7:30 p.m. at the Municipal Rose Garden, 1649 Naglee Ave.
