Notre Dame global health professor elected to city council

Heidi Beidinger-Burnett, a Notre Dame professor, beat out Hodge Patel, Derrick Perry and Angela Smith Wednesday to replace Troy Warner on the South Bend Common Council.

“Seven Democratic precinct chairs who live in the city’s 4th council district — that’s the city’s east side — voted by secret ballot at the Howard Park Event Center, after Beidinger and three other candidates gave speeches that were limited to three minutes,” WVPE 88.1 reported.

This follows leadership changes that prompted Warner to step away from city council to serve as the mayoral chief of staff.

The South Bend Tribune reported Beidinger-Burnett will serve the rest of Warner’s term, which ends Dec. 31, 2027.

Beidinger-Burnett has been a professor of the practice in the Eck Institute for Global Health since the fall of 2014 and holds a concurrent appointment in the Department of Biological Sciences.

According to her biography, at Notre Dame she focuses on public health and policy, with her most recent work involving lead levels in South Bend homes and the creation of low-cost screening kits.

Beidinger-Burnett did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
