WASHINGTON (TNND) — Pope Leo XIV warned world leaders on Monday to slow it down when it comes to artificial intelligence in his manifesto.
The manifesto is titled “Magnifica Humanitas” and states that lawmakers should address the availability of AI with “clarity to establish adequate regulatory tools capable of upholding justice and curbing the distorting effects of technological power.”
He wrote that the technology shouldn’t be considered as a force antagonistic to humanity and it should be used for good.
“New technologies open up a horizon extending in directions that are imaginable but not yet fully predictable,” the pope wrote. “This complicates the assessment of their potential impact and the long-term effects they may have on both the dignity of individuals and the common good.”
Last month, faith leaders requested that lawmakers ensure that there are legal safeguards to make sure humans control artificial-intelligence weapons.
In a letter to members of Congress first obtained by Axios, faith leaders make clear that they want humans controlling AI-weapons, not machines.
In the manifesto, Pope Leo said there needs to be an open discussion about ethical frameworks regarding AI.

“Calling for prudence, rigorous evaluation and even, at times, a slower pace in adopting AI does not mean opposing progress; instead, it is an exercise of responsible care for the human family,” he wrote.
