Republicans widen lead in CA-3 early ballot returns

Republicans accounted for 42% of returned ballots, with 21,067 ballots returned during the reporting period.

CALIFORNIA, USA — Republican voters expanded their lead in early ballot returns for California’s 3rd Congressional District primary, according to an updated Political Data Inc. ballot tracker. 

The updated data covered votes cast from May 4 through May 22, 2026. Political Data Inc. reported 50,585 ballots had been returned out of 477,597 ballots tracked in the district, or about 11% turnout. 

Republicans accounted for 42% of returned ballots, with 21,067 ballots returned during the reporting period. Democrats made up 37% of returned ballots, with 18,658 returns. Voters with no party preference or other affiliations accounted for 21% of returned ballots, with 10,860 returns. 

Older voters continued to make up the largest share of ballot returns in the district.

Voters 65 and older accounted for 60% of returned ballots, with 30,354 returns. Voters ages 50 to 64 made up 21% of returned ballots with 10,588 returns, while voters ages 35 to 49 accounted for 12% with 6,293 ballots returned. Voters ages 18 to 34 represented 7% of returned ballots with 3,350 returns. 

California’s 3rd Congressional District was significantly redrawn under Proposition 50, a change that gave Democrats an advantage in the district. Incumbent Kevin Kiley chose to give up his current seat and run for Congressional District 6.

District 3, which previously included all of El Dorado County, now stretches to Rancho Cordova. According to Ballotpedia, candidates in the race include:

  • Chris Bennett (D) 
  • Lyndon Cervantes (D) 
  • Heidi Hall (D) 
  • Christine Bish (R) 
  • Laura Koscki (R) 
  • Robb Tucker (R) 
  • Chris Richardson (G) 

The nonpartisan Cook Political Report rates the district as “Solid Democrat.”
